Londeix- the Saxophonists' Saxophonist July 3, 2008 J. Nowlin (Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This composite recording spans the entire career of one of the world's great musicians and performers. If you play, study or appreciate sax or clarinet this recording belongs in your library. This is not for audiophiles. Many takes are from LP's and Reel to Reels and are very old so the fidelity isn't always great but the playing is incredible. Where Marcel Mule left off so went Londeix. Aside from Mssr.'s phenomenal playing one gets a wonderful sampling of the saxophone repertoire, especially of the 20th Century. An historically significant recording full of the "joie de vivre" of a accomplished artist and saxophonist supreme!
Jean Marie Londeix - Portrait 4 CD set August 2, 2007 James Dobernig (WI) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This wonderful four CD set (Londeix Portrait) is a collection of alto saxophone recordings from the personal audio archives of the great French concert saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix and contains rare Londeix recordings unavailable anywhere else. The recorded works include Londeix renditions of many of the great works of concert saxophone literature including the Tableaux De Provence by Paule Maurice; the Dubois Concerto; the Hindemith Sonate; the Denisov Sonate; and my personal favorite, Milhaud's Scaramouche (29 individual works totaling 67 cuts). The recordings span 23 years from 1960 through 1983 with the recording quality of most of the CD being very good to excellent. Londeix is a seminal figure in the life of the saxophone and its literature. He premiered the Dubois concerto; the Denisov Sonate, the Murgier Concerto; Tableaux de Provence; Noda Improvisations; and once performed "Scaramouche" with Darius Milhaud conducting. This CD set provides the listener a career spanning look at the one of the world's greatest saxophone players, innovators, and teachers. A booklet containing a career retrospective, photographs, and track histories is also included. Critics have long celebrated the trail blazing career of Professor Londeix. Those who fancy themselves serious saxophonists should order this CD, listen to it intently, and learn from it as much as they can.
