Amazon.com Elvis was a walkin', talkin', singin' combination of indigenous American music and styles, but probably the first music he heard as a child was gospel--in Southern Baptist churches, on Memphis radio (where white Southern gospel quartets flourished during the '40s and '50s), and from black churches. Presley released an EP of gospel music in the '50s, around the same time he performed "Peace in the Valley" on one of his Ed Sullivan appearances. This 1960 release, however, represents his first full-length foray into gospel, and while it's a bit more produced than the EP, it still features beautiful singing. Staples such as "Joshua Fit the Battle" and "Swing Down Sweet Chariot" sound like they came directly from a Memphis service. Of course, for Presley, gospel included everything from the title track by Stuart Hambler (who ran against Eisenhower on the Prohibition ticket) to Rodgers & Hammerstein. After all, hybridization was his magic. --Bill Holdship

A Solemn Elvis September 29, 2007 AvidOldiesCollector (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) His Hand In Mine was a personal favourite of Elvis and so was a natural selection for the album title, which first appeared in December 1960. minus tracks 14 nd 15 which were added to the CD release. ou'll Never Walk Alone, from the musical Carousel, follows the Roy Hamilton arrangement as Elvis delivers it with purity and power, backed by The Jordanaires, and was recorded on September 11, 1967 in Nashville and first released as a single the following spring b/w We Call On Him. Who Am I? was recorded in Memphis on February 22, 1969 and first released in March 1971 on the LP You'll Never Walk Alone. The only fault with th is release, which has excellent sound reproduction, is the complete lack of liner notes, something common with almost all RCA/BMG CD releases covering Elvis. You'd think they would spend a bit and have someone write some interesting background notes and provide a discography of the contents when dealing with their most important recording artist in the history of their organization!

Elvis at his best March 19, 2006 Richard Laycock (El Cajon, CA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've heard Elvis since I was a kid in the '50s but I never appreciated his talent fully until I bought this CD. Everything about it is remarkable. Not only is the singing wonderful but Elvis had a hand in most of the arrangements. The music on most of the tracks is simply produced and sincere to the point of true inspiration.
great gospel August 13, 2005 M. Griner (GA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this album on record many years ago, then on cassette tape, now on cd. I love Elvis singing gospel as much, if not more than, his other music. Some of the best gospel music you will hear.
Rock me, Lord August 28, 2003 Johnny Heering (Bethel, CT United States) This was Elvis' first full length gospel album. Gospel music always brought out the best in Elvis, and this album was no exception. Elvis really poured his heart into all of these songs. This album is a legimimate classic, and it should be owned by every Elvis fan.
