5 out of 5 stars Gotta love that cheesy album cover........................   November 21, 2008
Puzzle box (Kuwait)
God's Of The Earth was a great album by this awesome stoner rock metal group. The Sword has easily surpassed their debut album, this was definitely not a sophomore slump. Gods of the Earth doesn't try to replicate the Black Sabbath hallucinations of Winters and it doesn't find it's groove right away. Lead guitar player J.D. Cronise still launches each song with a lick that could have come from Tony Iommi but they pick up to a gallop pretty quick, the album definitely has a modern influence, but also draws from a wider range of older metal groups like Motorhead, Iron Maiden etc. You can hear that the riffs were more tight and they improved on their song structures, this album definitely sounds alot heavier than Age Of Winters which was also a brilliant debut album . The opening track neatly demonstrates how they change things up with an acoustic picking which then cuts to 80's fluid leads and a couple of thrashy riffs. Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians which is also the first single from this album just totally rocks and is probably one of their best songs next to Freya, with it's heavy metal kick drums and the menace of crashing cymbals and catchy but weird lyrics. I think it's more fantasy and sci/fi but then again who cares about the concept when you have music that's this good. To Take the Black illustrates the new fusion of thrash metal and stoner doom metal/rock. While the meat of the song is thrash, there's a jig to the melodies almost sounding like a Thin Lizzy song. It's buried under a froth of overdrive, but they make the Celtic roots explicit by reprising the melody as an acoustic bonus track. Maiden, Mother and Crone which is yet another favorite track of mine is a great tune that rocks out loud and has a nice groove. Gods climaxes with a multi-part instrumental White Sea that's proggy without becoming pretentious, each change contributing to the images of tossing waves, stalled currents and battle ships (lol I know it's so weird but that's what I thought of when I heard this song). How Heavy This Axe is yet another great and memorable track with pummeling riffs and of course there's stuff about axes and other medieval stuff. I highly recommend getting this album especially if you love early Iron Maiden, Clutch, Electric Wizard and Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath is all over this album which is laced with blues riffs, 70's southern rock, and an overdose of 80's thrash, noticably more thrashy than their debut album which is fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Graet album! See this band live!   November 19, 2008

I was pretty fond of Age of Winters, but this sophmore effort is twice as good. A far more cohesive overall album. I just saw The Sword live with Clutch, and I highly suggest checking them out. These boys FEEL IT! I have not seen anybody play as hard as these guys in a while. Wingo abuses his kit so much that the stick I caught after the show was in shambles. If you like it hard, loud, and rooted geek-lore, This is your band (and album) LOL.

4 out of 5 stars shows progress .........   September 7, 2008

This review is for people who have heard Age of Winters (the first album) and are considering purchasing this. Firstly, my opinion of the previous CD was that it rocked pretty hard, but it did sound overly repetitive at times and somewhat amateurish; The cadence of the vocals were the same throughout the disc, which proved to be distracting almost to the point of being annoying. I would probably rate it a 2.5.
Now, on to "Gods of the Earth." Quite an improvement. The band didn't necessarily become more "polished", which could be construed as a criticism, but the sound and overall mix were more pleasing. The songs are structured better, more sophisticated without venturing into prog-rock. The album is heavy, heavy, heavy. And the crankin' riffs have much more effect because of the bass interludes and quiet sections that intro. the songs or divide up the time changes in the middle of songs.
Many of the lukewarm reviews written here don't seem to recognize that this disc is clearly, I think, the result of a band getting better.
The vocals and lyrics are better. They still sound like Tony Iommi, Ozzy, and Dio, playing Dungeons and Dragons - but they are more poetic and less sophomoric. So I would say if you were intrigued, but not totally sold on Age of Winters, check this out -- you might be pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best metal albums in YEARS!!!!   August 31, 2008
TX MetalMan (Austin, TX)
I got turned on to The Sword when they hit the Austin music scene a few years ago. It was really refreshing to hear a very tight band with such heavy riffage! You just don't often get the heavy with such great musicians and lyrics. (Yes, they're just as good live as recorded) Their first album, Age of Winters didn't leave my CD player / iPod playlist for months.
Then, I got a treat... I found out Gods Of The Earth was coming out! I was a bit worried about The Sword's sophomore effort as their first had been so good. How could it be any better? Well, one spin of the disc and all worries were laid aside.

In short - This album is one of the best heavy rock / doom metal / stoner rock albums in YEARS! The Sword freakin' rocks and listening to this album never gets old. Great musical textures (without screaming screechy vocals) all woven together to make a very solid and heavy track listing. Buy this album and see why Metallica has tapped The Sword to be their opening act for the "Death Magnetic" tour!

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't disagree more with the haters   August 21, 2008

I read the negative reviews and have to say that I don't think we have the same cd. This is a great rock and roll album. If you happen to love stoner rock/metal, you certainly aren't going to hear anything new. BUT, you aren't going to hear anything really new or different in the whole genre. This music is for people who like this kind of music. Don't allow a music snob to make the call for you, hear them yourself.
