Great, but not widescreen November 15, 2008 Ken Kaniff (East Coast, USA) End Of An Era is a great show. I also own From Wishes To Eternity which is also great..Unfortunately, both are fullscreen dvds! This version of End Of An Era is quite new yet it is fake widescreen. It appears widescreen if you watch it on a normal tv but on a widescreen it is 4:3 aspect. Very disappointing in that manner, and I do feel the video quality is a bit lacking but other than those two things it is a good dvd/performance. If only they put some music videos on it! Now it is time to wait for the Dark Passion Play dvd, assuming Nightwish makes one. For a truly epic performance, check out the Within Temptation & Metropole Orchestra dvd: Black Symphony. It truly is the best I've seen.
Great music, singing gets old July 8, 2008 Timothy M. Marlow (Midwest USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
While I'd heard many songs by Nightwish, I hadn't purchased any of their albums. I decided to purchase this DVD as it was the final performance for their lead singer with the band. Musically, this band is as good as any out there. The melodies ebb and flow nicely, with great themes. While I enjoy Tarja's voice on some songs, on others it's just too much. Didn't ruin my overall enjoyment of the concert, but, the operatic style tends to wear thin after awhile. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and will enjoy it many more times in the future. Perhaps more of the bass player singing would have pushed it to five stars. If you enjoy this type of music, then this is definitely for you. Special Features are kind of interesting, if you speak Finnish. Following the band on the last 3 weeks of the tour would have been much more interesting if there was subtitling so you knew what they were saying. Overall, I would buy this DVD again and will prompt others to buy it.
Nightwish - End of an Era June 3, 2008 Matt Fuchs (Minnesota, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have only become a fan of Nightwish in the past year, a few months prior to Dark Passion Play's release. At the time, I was mostly a fan of the new stuff with Anette, though it was with "With I Had An Angel", "Nemo" and "Sleeping Sun" with Tarja (all of which are included in this set) that made a made fan to begin with. Still, I mostly preferred Annettes pop-rock approach to the songs over Tarja's operatic voice. But then as I was looking for new nightwish material, I went back to listen to songs with Tarja. I watched some live perforances on Youtube, which then lead me to this DVD. After watching, I have new respect for the band that I already loved and new appreciation for Tarja and her approach to music. The live perforances are phenomanal, and I reccomend it to any new or old fan of Nightwish. As for the DVD. The sound and video quality is just about top notch. The documentary is so-so. The band speaks in finnish most of the time, but it's still a little interesting to see some of the stuff that goes on backstage and such. There's no narrator, so it often seems like you're watching Big Brother or something without the whispering or having much of an idea what's going on sometimes. That said, I wish they would have performed more songs from their older ablums, including "Dead Boys Poem", "Deep Silent Complete" and "Elvenpath", but then again this is a tour for their "Once" album, so I shouldn't complain. The songs they did choose are among their best. Again, if you're a fan of Nightwish, new or old, I reccomend this.
End of an Era for Nightwish, but a beginning of an Era for me April 6, 2008 Lady D. (USA) End of an Era I have played this DVD over and over again. When they come to the USA in my area I am there as close to the stage as possible. This is the last concert that you see Tarja before she goes solo. Once you see them in concert you will not leave disappointed. Their energy during concerts are contagious. You will end up banging your head with the best of them.
This is not a DVD Audio March 2, 2008 D. L. Newhouse (Gainesville, FL) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
And it is not Spinefarm either. It is 1 single disc DVD-Video from NEMS Enterprises, made in Brazil. I tried to update the product information and the only bindings available were "Audio CD" "DVD Audio" "Cassette" or "LP Record" and this item is none of these. I made one mistake, NEMS Enterprises is from Argentina, not Brazil as I originally stated. No one found my review helpful, which means that no one - not the buyers, not Amazon, and not NEMS Enterprises knows what a DVD-Audio is. On a related note, there is an SACD version of Wishes to Eternity now.
