In 1995, some of rock & roll's most notorious--and well-respected--beer drinkers and hell-raisers stepped outside the bounds of their respective bands to form a sort of underground supergroup. That instantly legendary cult band, Down, featuring Pantera's Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown, Corrosion of Conformity's Pepper Keenan, Crowbar's Kirk Windstein and Eye Hate God's Jimmy Bower, shared a common birthplace in New Orleans, a love for Black Sabbath, and if the songs "The Seed" and "Doobinterlude" are any indication, a propensity for a certain leafy substance. On this headbanging, 15-track follow-up to 1995's Nola, Down once again serve up a sludgy, sonic stew of Sabbath-influenced heaviness. Recorded in Louisiana, Down II has the swampy sounds, stoner-rock vibe, and dirt-bag patina of authentic, deeply rooted old-school rock 'n' metal. From the stripped down, gently creepy "Where I'm Going," featuring dobro, farfisa, and Hammond organ to the '70s metallic grind-groove of "Lysergik Funeral Procession" to the Southern-fried midtempo "Stained Glass Cross" to trippier, party-time entries, Down II provides an apt soundtrack for those still celebrating the dazed and confused lifestyle. --Katherine Turman

3 out of 5 stars Certainly not Nola   December 7, 2007

What can I say about Down II? It's ok. It doesn't come close to the intensity or punchy agressiveness of Nola in any way. It's more of a southern rock feel on most of the songs. It's not terrible, but if you bought it (like I did) expecting more of the electricity of their first album, you'll likely be a bit disappointed.

Still, there are some great songs on the album. It's got a good feel and some solid songwriting. It's just not the jewel that their first one was.

Overall - If you're a big fan of the band, get it. If you're a big fan of the first album, probably oughta borrow it from a buddy first and hear what you're getting before you drop the coin on it.

5 out of 5 stars lasting appeal   October 30, 2007

just found this album again haven't listened to it in a while. still a great listen and purchase, the album is fairly long and flows from start to end very well, and some songs are heavier than others so it transists between heavy and quiet nicely. Like the title says this has some nice lasting appeal, in my opinion.

personal favorite is "Learn from this mistake".

4 out of 5 stars Really 4.5...   September 6, 2007

This is really a great album that I believe surpasses its predecessor. As a Mississippi native that has spent a great deal of time traversing Highway 49 and I-59, I have heard few albums that encompass the feel of the area like this album. I think that is something that a lot of people miss who gripe about the stylistic twists and turn on this set. This is a snap shot of not just Southern rock, but more particularly everything that is the swamp and the coast metal scene. I love it for that reason.

Songs like Stained Glass Cross and Lies just drip with the groove/jazz vibe of New Orleans. Other songs like Beautifully Depressed and the stripped down Where I'm going reveal a deep blues sensibility (I think the latter is a very well done bit of delta music really). Other songs like New Orleans is a Dying Whore and There's Something on My Side are classic dirty coast metal. I can understand how to someone unfamiliar with the area might think none of this makes sense together, but to me it does perfectly. It's all little jewels formed from the influences that one is absolutely steeped in if you grow in the area. Landing On The Mountains Of Meggido is a nice psychedelic send off for a good album.

The only reason I would shave a half of a star is that the songs do occasionally wander promising something they never quite deliver. All and all it is a great album, and an interesting progression from NOLA. I am excited to see what they third will bring.

I expected more as the singer is from one of the heaviest bands ever known. Decentish, but I wasn't very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars southern fried awesomeness   May 8, 2007

I may be in the minority, but I actually like this record slightly better than Down's first album. Both of them are classics, but this one has a more groovy new orleans feel to me. It's also a bit more languid, distorted, and melodic. More dark, and diverse and overall a step up from "NOLA" if you ask me. It seems more genuine and has more soul than most of Pantera's works... I know that might be a controversial thing to say... but recently read an interview where Philip Anselmo mentioned how he was in Down for the music and the music only, not playing a role, and you can tell. Also I love the story of how they made the record in a month or so in Phil's barn in Louisiana. Love the lyrics, a lot of focus on addiction. I just love Philip Amselmo's vocals and this has some great guitar work too. If you like "Deliverance" by COC or "Southern Trendkill" by Pantera you'll love this. Highlights are: "There's Something On My Side," "Beautifully Depressed," "Stained Glass Cross," "Ghosts along the Mississipi" but all the tracks are great, no filler here. I recently saw Phil & co on tour in NYC and they really rocked these tunes live too. A must for any metal collection... cannot wait for the third Down album!
