Album Description This is the debut release from San Diego's AS I LAY DYING. Metalcore/harcore at it's brutal and epic best. Superbly melodic at times, shifting to chaos and neck-snapping precision. Recommended for fans of Poison the Well, Converge, Zao, and Dillinger Escape Plan.

better than re-release! July 29, 2007 M. G. (south carolina) the original is much better than the re-release. it has more of a raw sound than the processed sound on the new version. i prefer to hear what the band can do instead of the recording engineer.
WAIT!!! RERELEASE IS COMING!!! January 29, 2006 Eric J. Lynch (Seattle, WA USA) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Here is a post from As I Lay Dying's website to fans who want this album: "Please stop paying $40 - $75 for our old CD's on used CD websites! This May we're re-releasing our first two recordings previously out on Pluto Records. Both "Beneath the Encasing of Ashes", which was recorded two months after the band started, and our split EP songs, which were recorded a year later, will both be on one CD. Wait until May and you'll spend less than $15 to get two CD's worth of material. Understand that it is old material, but you'll be suprised hearing what we did to some of the songs to make them sound clearer." SO PLEASE DON'T PAY RIDICULOUS PRICES TO OTHER PEOPLE. WAIT AND SUPPORT THE BAND WITH YOUR MONEY!!!
As I Lay Dying is awesome December 9, 2005 Bob Rob (Florida, MO USA) this CD is prety good, its more raw and the sound of it is of a lesser quality, but none the less its good, the songs are good, and Tim's scream is awesome great CD, you should get it if you like As I Lay Dying

Yes, this does sound like Zao at some parts, but this is a great album by a great band. Personally, I think it's the best so far, even though I love "Frail Words Collapse" a lot. Besides, you can't just hate a band because YOU think they sound like something else. It's tragic that this CD went out of print. It's such a great album. The opener, "Beneath The Encasing Of Ashes", picks things up, and "Forced To Die" and "The Voices That Betray Me" show that this band knows how to play some good music. If you are a fan of As I Lay Dying OR Zao, I'd advise that you try to find this album if possible. Believe me, it's just that good. New album, "Shadows Are Security", coming this June! (I hope they do a repress of "Beneath The Encasing Of Ashes").
Zao rip off... April 28, 2005 rottedpileofdecayskin (Massachusetts) 1 out of 16 found this review helpful
Even doe their second release album didn't have the zao vocals? It still sucked but yeah just so my point will be made...As i lay dying's "beneath the encasing of ashes" truly sounds like a zao rip-off but like most christian bands which most of them used the same vocal range as zao's i just call this a attempt to rip them off without even wanting to rip them off...Dont waste your money.
