Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
Scars on Broadway, the long-awaited collaboration between guitarist-frontman Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan, both best known for their work in the multi-Platinum-selling, Grammy-winning band SYSTEM OF A DOWN, has signed with Interscope Records and will see their self-titled debut released on July 29.

With Malakian sitting in the Scars' producer chair, he and Dolmayan entered the studio last September, recorded nearly two-dozen songs for the album, and then whittled down the final track listing to 14 songs.

Many of the Scars on Broadway songs had their genesis years ago. "I like to let my songs marinate over time, that helps determine which ones speak to me the loudest," explained Malakian. Malakian, who penned or co-penned SOAD classics such as "Aerials," "Chop Suey!," "Hypnotize," and "B.Y.O.B.", wrote the Scars songs mostly on keyboards and a drum machine. On the new scars material Malakian injects more rock than metal, citing influences from Iggy Pop to David Bowie to Neil Young.

Different from the chaotic/alt/metal sound of SOAD, the Scars tracks are more song-based and showcase Malakian's varied writing style, from the simmering rock sound of "World Long Gone" to the melodic yet desolate "Universe." On the politically-tinged "3005," Malakian proves he is still as provocative as ever with the lyric, "Let's clap our hands for the president and Jesus Christ/And don't forget Charles Manson..." And "They Say," the first track leaked to the public, is heavy, but in more of a 1970s punk fashion. Some of the other confirmed tracks include "Enemy," ""Stoner Hate," "Babylon," and "Cute Machines."

Scars on Broadway has already played a handful of live shows, including Coachella 2008, where the Los Angeles Times singled them out as "one of the festival's hottest highlights." They also opened for Metallica at an L.A. benefit gig - SPIN said that their set "made it clear how little System's hiatus has dulled each man's hyperactive creativity." Scars plans to tour extensively to support the new album.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars about 1/3 really good; 2/3rds throwaway blah blah blah   October 15, 2008
Big T (Las Vegas)
About 1/3 of the tracks are good and really rock out. Good stuff!

Unfortunately, the remaining 2/3rds of the tracks are throwaway songs.

4 out of 5 stars scars   October 9, 2008

It's a good, honest record that ROCKS! Much like System of a Down records, you would either love it or hate - no middle ground. At times it does sound like SYstem because it has the same rhythm section as SOAD, but otherwise, it's really nice and refreshing. Buy it and play LOUD!

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised!   September 29, 2008

First off, I love System of a down and Serj Tankian. When I first heard Daron had a project coming out I was a bit skeptical. I like Daron, but I wasn't sure if he could pull off a whole album. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. I can honestly say that I like every song on this album and I can't say that for too many cd's. I would definitely buy this, even if I'd never heard of Daron Malakian.

5 out of 5 stars The great mind of System of A Down. Unique songwritting!   September 21, 2008
Zeno Rodrigo (Staten Island, NY USA)
This album is really interesting and addictive. Gets better after every listen. Its cool though, it kinda reminds me of how good and insane the movie "The Dark Knight" was, especially with the first track called "Serious" and Jokers famous line in the movie being, "Why so serious". It wasn't as epic and classic as "The Dark Knight" but I don't think that Malakian was aiming for that stature as he makes music for himself, and not for his fans, keeping his music within honest creativity. Every song is unique and isn't forced like some System songs. Simple yet powerful lyrics with a mix of punk, psychedelic, and metal riffs keeping us listeners very interested. The song "Cute Machines" starts off like a punk rock song, and switches to a grindcore blast beat in the breakdown. The whole album is based around highs and lows, but in a good way, becuase you never know what your gonna get and it all sounds good.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING... I'd almost say infectious!   September 16, 2008

This CD has been in my player in the car non-stop since I received it. It is FANTASTIC. My husband and I both agree that there really isn't a bad song on the whole CD! How much new music can you really say that about these days? Every song is unique and gets into your mind and body, seriously. Some will have you doing 80 on the freeway with your windows down and your head thrashing around. Others will have you internalizing more, bringing thoughts and daydreams ranging from disturbing to inspiring. The music, the lyrics... it is all perfect, and will have you craving it's sound from morning till night. Get it!!!
