Though not their first-ever career survey, Rush's Spirit of Radio compilation is an ideal point of entry for newbie fans or anyone who consistently likes the Rush songs most often heard on commercial radio. While 1990's Chronicles set was more encompassing--including tracks beyond Spirit of Radio's '87 cut-off point--the Canadian prog-rock trio's benchmark moments are represented among these 16 songs. Hence the appearance of "Closer to the Heart," "Tom Sawyer," "New World Man," "Time Stand Still," "Fly by Night," "Subdivisions," and the title track. --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars A good compilation of hits   September 3, 2008
Joseph C. Helton
If you want to go out and buy a cd that hits the radio friendly highlights from Rush, then you can't go wrong with "The Spirit of Radio", a compilation which spans 1974-1987. It's a great way to have one disc you can pop in your player and have a good time with Rush, and can easily be considered a great starting point to any of you who have not heard Rush. From an experienced fan, I'd say the disc is definitely representative of their work, but leaves alot left to be explored. I understand that they went with the radio friendly edits, ie. the excerpt from "2112", and all we get from "Hemispheres" is "The Trees", completely skipping over the pomp and grandeur of the title track.
That said, you get some real rockers, like "Freewill", "Tom Sawyer", "Working Man" among others and several tracks from the 80's including the philosophical "Time Stand Still" (featuring Amie Mann from Til Tuesday). A definite worthwhile purchase for new fans and an enjoyable compilation. 5 stars.

For the people who listen Rush for the first time, this is the Rush album you need, this is a clear example of their best work. The Rush from the 70's and 80's is an example of creativity, passion and variety, and is just one cd with 16 essential songs.

I couldn't stand Rush back in the 70s but now listening to them, I have to wonder what I was smoking back then. Fantastic guitar work and the bass - no wonder I always thought there were more in the band, he plays it like a regular guitar. If you download it into your iPod or MP3, there are only a couple of songs I'd delete which should have been allowed to die a quiet death. That said, be sure to listen to the less well-known songs at the back of the CD, pure genius.

5 out of 5 stars Spirited Radio Star!   June 9, 2008

The Dalmation on the cover doesn't make any sense to me. But the rest of this recording does. Containing a good number of their best songs, this is the perfect introduction to one of the most prolific rock bands ever! While I can't say I love every track on here, there's enough really good songs to keep the listener entertained. I imagine they thought this would be a good intro for new listeners, but with the non-success of their most recent album, probably not many of them. But it's still a great intro if you, like me, are newish to the band. Quite Recommended!
