Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
Def Leppard's rock sensibilities shot them right to the top of the charts in the '80s. On their third album, Pyromania, the band reconciled new wave melodicism with heavy metal and catchy hooks without compromising any of its edge. The album has sold over 10 million copies, due in part to heavy rotation on MTV. But even without their ubiquitous television presence, anthems like "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin'" still had the stuff that drove the kids crazy. Bursts of screaming guitars and simple power riffs joined forces with choruses that begged to be shouted along to. Guitarists Phil Collen and Steve Clarke may have provided all the pyrotechnics on Pyromania, but the focal point of Def Leppard's sound, particularly for their teenage female fans, was singer Joe Elliott's voice (and, of course, his hair). The record--an essential brick in the foundation of '80s metal--also contains the hit "Photograph." --Steve Gdula

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Album that seriously put Def Leppard on the MAP   October 9, 2008
Jeff Edwards (Twin Falls, Idaho)
While I love to brag that I discovered Def Leppard before the "Masses" did after Pyromania literally exploded on the scene, it truly doesn't matter when you discover them--only that you do. While 'High 'N Dry' remains (probably) my all-time favorite Leppard release, there is SO much to love about Pyromania that I hardly know where to begin...

To a large extent, 'Photograph' was the song that most people remember hearing first by these underrated English Metal Masters. Sure, it was an enormously HUGE hit, but remains one of my least favorite songs from their repetoire. The song from Pyromania that just *Did It* for me, was probably 'Rock, Rock 'Til you Drop'. It had ALL the ingredients of what (in 1983) I was looking for in a Pop Metal sound. From there I became enthralled with other classics, 'Billy's Got A Gun', 'Comin' Under Fire' and of course, 'Too Late For Love'. Sure, 'Rock of Ages' was a radio staple, but I found so much more to enjoy, the least of which also included 'Foolin' and 'Action! Not Words'.

You have to remember that as I purchased this record (or cassette as I recall my first copy happened to be) I was still jammin' to 'Bringin' On The Heartbreak/Switch 625', 'Mirror Mirror', 'Another Hit And Run' and 'Let It Go'--just a small sampling of what made Def Leppard AWESOME from 'High 'N Dry'...so Pyromania was just a natural extension of what I already LOVED about their 2nd record. Unfortunately their first record, 'On Through The Night' just didn't have that mass appeal they managed to succeed with in their subsequent releases. That isn't to say that they haven't laid more than their share of eggs over the years, but Pyromania is a perfect example of when a band was definitely in the Right Place at the Right Time. I wonder if the same record were produced today, would get the same kind of love that it received when it came out over 25 years ago?

I've been in radio for the better part of 20 years now, and being exposed to bands on a daily basis, some of which have that *IT* sound, and the vast majority that simply doesn't, I have developed an ear (I guess) for what sound works, and what sound falls flat. Pyromania, for the Pop Metal fans out there easily ranks in the Top 10 of ALL-Time. Record sales alone proves this to be true, although Hysteria literally blows it away in that category. Say what you want about how the band has evolved over the years, one thing remains constant: my un-ending excitement every time the beginning riff to virtually ANY song off this cd begins to play.

5 out of 5 stars Classic   July 18, 2008
J. Chandler (Australia)
Many people assume that Def Leppard is heavy metal and so do not try them. However this album and Hysteria are must haves for any music enthusiast. The songs are well crafted and with a lot of attention to production.
Once again Mobile Fidelity has done a fine job of bringing out the best from the original recording without resorting to compression or other nasties. The bass is deep and strong, vocals are very clear and every instrument can be heard. A must for audiophiles that like to rock!

5 out of 5 stars Watch Your Back Hysteria   May 15, 2008
GodsofWar (SAGBEACH)
Perfect Blend of Pop and genuine metal...more edgy than Hysteria. Photograph is the best pop metal song of all time...and Def Leppards best (despite all the success of nearly every song on Hysteria).

Also...

Pyromania has nearly caught up to Hysteria in album sales...10 million plus against 12 million plus. DL is one of five bands all time to have two diamond albums (Beatles, Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Eagles).

5 out of 5 stars If it's not in your CD collection, you're missing out   May 8, 2008
Johnny Boy (Hockessin, DE)
I'll be the first to say I am not a die-hard Def Leppard fan. I LOVE hair metal, and groups like Scorpions, Motley Crue, Dokken and Whitesnake never fail to please me. Def Leppard is a great, rocking group that knows how to make some great music.

And 1983's 'Pyromania' is probably their finest moment. 'Billy's Got A Gun,' 'Photograph,' 'Rock Of Ages' and 'Foolin'' got tons of radio airplay back in the day, and they all remain classic rock radio staples even today.

Mutt Lange produced this classic, which is, in my opinion, one of the best produced records of all-time.

Overall, this is a classic album from a great hair metal band. Highly recommended for any Def Leppard or classic rock fan. It's an essential release that skyrocketed Leppard to fame. ENJOY!!!

5 out of 5 stars The End of Chapter One for Def Leppard   May 2, 2008
King Lerxst (Austin, Texas United States)
This is the album that really broke Def Leppard to the masses. Nearly every song is a classic and two of their best epics appear here in "Die Hard The Hunter" and "Billy's Got A Gun". This is one of those albums that everyone should own, it's just that good. This will be the last hurrah for Pete Willis as he was dismissed during the recording process. His influence is all over the record though. Def Leppard will never have the same big riff style that they had with Willis but he drank himself out of the band so what can you do. We all saw what happened to Steve Clark when he couldn't handle the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. New guitarist Phil Collen's impact will be very apparent on Hysteria.
