great music... October 7, 2008 merlot (Texas) i never heard of hil st. soul but this cd was recommended to me on amazon. i'm a big music fan with diverse tastes and i really like this cd. her vocals are strong and her lyrics are solid too. hil st. soul is a talented artist. i plan to get some of her other music. i would love to see her live. my favorites on this cd are broken again and black rose. if you like the feel of jill scott, ledisi or n'dambi you would like hil st. soul. these are the artists music lovers should support!
They deserve a dozen red roses for always making such beautiful music! September 27, 2008 Mikeisha Best (Mitchellville, Maryland United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Have you ever heard of Hil St. Soul? Since the music industry insists on forcing us to be exposed to less talented artists, chances are you have not. However, someone who appreciates real music is willing to find remarkable talents such as Hil St. Soul and promote them as much as I possibly can. They deserve just as much exposure as anyone else. So, just where did I find this group? I don't limit myself when I turn on the radio. I flip through each of the stations in hopes that I will find something that grasps my attention. One day I was listening to the neo-soul station on AOL radio and I came across Hil. St Soul. When their song was over, I immediately went to pursue more of their music. Since then, I have listened to their albums and they have never disappointed me. "Black Rose" is one of 2008's best releases, needless to say. Anytime this group releases new music, they outdo themselves. Hilary has the smoky, yet beautiful vocals and Victor administers those beats that you can't find anywhere but on a Hil St. Soul album. Laid back is the tone of this compact disc, but don't worry, they will always give you something to dance to. Every song is worth listening to, but, like with every Hil St. Soul album, some songs just linger in your mind indefinitely; they are just that good. "Sweetest Days", "Broken Again" and "Smile" are the best songs here. They all are a bit haunting, but they are just beautiful. "Don't Forget the Ghetto" is a mid-tempo number which tells people to not forget where they came from. "Black Rose" is infused with R&B, hip-hip, jazz and quiet storm. Maybe that's why I enjoy their music so much. They interpolate so many different sounds, creating their own style all the while. A must have! Mikeisha's Top 5 1. "Smile" 2. "Sweetest Days" 3. "Broken Again" 4. "Hanging On" 5. "Black Rose"
Total agreement September 26, 2008 C. Mosby (Las Vegas, NV United States) In agreement with the reviews here, I want to add that I'm hoping someday she will be recognized more in the U.S. Her beautiful and wide ranged voice leaves you with the feeling that she is under exposed. She has the style and ability to cross over into any genre with ease, and many would want to hear more from her.
Hilary is Real...just a Blessing of talent, vocals, and groove... August 22, 2008 D. Carter 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm investing and gathering all of the Hil St. Soul material. This is a great work and many would otherwise sleep on the songs---never hearing such vocals/production. It's modern day Soul to Soul reminiscing with a flair of the UK and smooth R&B groove. Don't sleep on this on Soulidified or any other CDs. Hil St. Soul gets better with each work. "Make Time For Love" and Relax with Hil St. Soul.
Best so far July 31, 2008 H. Reynolds (North Carolina) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I think this is their best effort yet. Black Rose is better produced and more refined than any of the other cd's they have put out. Well worth listening to.
