A nice selection of highlights well done in period style March 22, 2006 Larry VanDeSande (Mason, Michigan United States) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Masaaki Suzuki's 1999 recording of the complete "St. Matthew Passion", from which these selections are taken, has been hailed by most critics as his best work in Bach choral music and as peer to the better period performance recordings of recent vintage incluidng Gardiner and Harnoncourt. Most critical journals hailed this work for its lucidity, clarity and devotional (aka not dramatic) approach. All those attributes are on display in this judicious and generous (TT 81:18) collection of highlights from Bach's passion about Christ's arrest, betrayal, conviction, crucifixion and resurrection. Just about every favorite aria is included in the CD. With 24 tracks constituting 43 sections of the passion, the performance focuses mostly on Part 2, where most of the action and religious drama takes place. I like this CD and think it is a wonderful introduction to this glorious music. You can get a strong idea of the entire passion by listening to this and reading the text, which is translated in four languages in the booklet. William Jewsom's notes (also translated into four langauges) talk about the religious significance of the music and discuss the performers. I read a couple critics that were so overcome by the sound on this recording they could barely contain themselves. When I played it in 5.1 surround sound I heard some of what overwhelmed these critics. The recording is highly balanced and each section of the choir seems more individual than in other recordings of this music. The spatial arrangement is good throughtout the recording. I found some things I didn't care for in this performance and recording, also. The period band supporting the performance is not distinctive in any way. The woodwinds often sound thin and reedy. Listen to the flute support for the glorious soprano aria, "Aus Liebe, aus Liebe" for an extreme example. I also thought the chorus occasionally sounded generic and lacked projection almost like a a thin fog settled over the production. I'm sure this must be the venue and not the recording technology, which is first rate SurroundSound. I have no complaints about any of the solo singing, however. It is all excellent to wonderful and the part singing is always heartfelt. I have never heard a countertenor sing better than Robin Blaze in the typically alto aria, "Erbarme dich." The important roles are performed exquisitely well by Gerd Turk (Evangelist), Peter Kooy (Jesus), Nancy Argenta (soprano solos), Blaze, tenor Makoto Sakurad and base Chiyuki Urano, who does yeoman work as Judas, Pilate and Pontifex, a role I have performed in this music. The final grade is very good for this production, which probably should be sampled first by those put off by the period performance approach. I would call this a middle ground production that eschews extreme authenticity while having none of Rilling's drama and none of Klemperer's excessive romance.
An Amazing SACD November 14, 2005 A. Craig (Tucson, AZ) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
As with J.S. Bach's Cantatas Massaki Suzuki brings his great skill and love for this music. Many of the best momemnts from the complete performance are included on this very well packed SACD At 81:18 it is one of the longest CD's on the market. If you are looking for a highlights CD of the St. Matthew Passion you need look no further than this SACD.
