The Title that best represents the band and it's legion of fans. November 22, 2008 James Simpson (USA) Priest hit it big in the 80s. After the groundbreaking 1980 release of "British Steel",the band took a slip in quality with there next release,"Point of Entry". This slip was made up with there biggest commercial success, the classic,"Screaming for Vengeance". However the band wasn't quite as heavy overall on that album and compensated for a heavier release resulting in this album. In my opinion, this is the Priest album of the 80s with the most pure metal outlook,an absolute blind attack of metal purity that unfortunately the bad foresakes for half a dozen years. Now mind you,the writing was never back to the brilliance of there 70s releases, but few albums were as consistently rocking as this heavy classic proved. It seems underrated, yet seriously, more fan favorites have sprung from this album than any other of there 80s albums.(Even British Steel). Here's the album,Track by track: Freewheel Burning-This opens the album with one of Rob's best vocal performances. One of the best OTTs of the band's career. Jawbreaker-Another Classic with another definitive vocal performance, and a particularly burning solo by Tipton. Rock Hard Ride Free-Dumb as hell, but who dosen't pump there fist to it? A live favorite that we all continue to rock to,"ALL DAY!ALL NIGHT!". The Sentinel-The best track on the album. This is the epic,a sci-fi tale of a hitman from hell. The intro is one of the great metal intros, ever. Love Bites-Wonderfully high octane gothic track with a great riff and one of Rob's most predatory vocal jobs, singing about his intentions as a sexually driven vampire(what other kind IS there?). That ending is headbanging goodness! Eat Me Alive-PMRC favorite, originally titled "Bad Girls Wear Leather" is a hilarious song about.....just guess. Absolutely awesome. Rob confesses he was in a deep state of inebriation when he wrote it! Some Heads are Gonna Roll-Not written by the band actually, but a classic headbanger that fits them just fine. One of there best songs, with a chorus that won't stay out of your head! Night Comes Down-One of Priest's all time best ballads that is heavy enough to work with great guitar work and vocals. Somewhat reminiscent of there 70s work combined with an 80s sensibility. Heavy Duty/Defenders of the Faith-A triumphant ending to a great metal record,as Rob and the audience proclaim what they are and always will be. Defenders of the Faith. Absloutely classic record that is an essential for any true metalhead. Get it now.
Defenders Of The Faith November 4, 2008 Morton (Colorado) Judas Priest-Defenders Of The Faith **** Continuing on with the same formula from the previous album Screaming For Vengeance but with a twist. Everything on Defenders has a different feel, a more commercial sound and appeal, though by no means were they selling out mind you. Remember, Defenders was Judas Priest darkest album lyrically and feel wise since Stained Class from 1978. Defenders had some of Priest all time classics. The albums fiery opener 'Freewheel Burning' is pure metal at the best of it's power. A killer guitar solo from Tipton and some on point drumming. 'Jawbreaker' while a little different is a classic none the less. 'The Sentinel' is a priest epic complete with a incredible solo, out of nowhere bridge, and some of the best vocals of Halfords life. His lyrics of impending doom are also very cool. The title track as well is among Priests greatest songs. 'Some Heads Are Gonna Roll' is easily in the top Priest songs, that is really all you can say about it. The problem lies in the rest of the songs. 'Love Bites' is annoying due to the slight synth use, especially right before Glenn and K.K.'s solo. 'Eat Me Alive' is just stupid. Not because of what it is about, that actually makes it a little better. The fact that Rob Halford had the nerve to write a song about that in his position and lead a million metal heads who thought it was something else is amazing. The song in general is not one of Priest finner moments. On another note, the bonus tracks found here are the worst of all the Judas Priest remasters. Over all the performance of the band is fantastic here for the most part. The production could have been better especially on the few tracks where the guitars get lost in the mix, but then again there never really has been a Priest album with good production value. Aside from a few minor issues Defenders Of The Faith is a great metal album and one that every head banger would be proud to own.
Love it! October 2, 2008 M. Howes 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Definitely the last of the classic albums. It's a solid rocker, but I still hold Stained Class as the ultimate Priest masterpiece.
one of the best and one of the worst September 30, 2008 Ian Mark Rosen (Los Angeles, CA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of the most consistent Judas Priest albums on a musical level. Every song is very memorable musically. Even the slow songs are slick and well-written. Side one, in particular has a catchy nonstop momentum. My only objection is the lyrics of the song Eat Me Alive. Musically, the song jams and is very rocking. The words, however, appear to be written by a very spiteful, mean-spirited 10-year old. This album made me rethink my interest in heavy metal as a musical form. Sure, the music's great, but with lyrics that embarassing, is it even worth listening to? I was recently tempted to buy the remastered CD used, but at the last minute I bought Joni Mitchell's For The Roses instead. What a great decision. The songs don't rock as much, but the melodies are intriguing and beautiful, the lyrics are infinitely more interesting and the music doesn't make me feel like I drank too much coffee.
Excellent album June 30, 2008 Stein (Little Rock, AR) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of my favorite Judas Priest's albums. Buy it if you like their later music.
