Editorial Reviews:

Pinata proves to be the perfect title for the sophomore disc from Mexican Institute of Sound. It's got more colorful grooves and sweet surprises than you can shake, or swing, a stick at. One-man programming band Camilo Lara stuffs the disc with quirky samples and buoyant choruses that are decidedly Mexican but could reflect life from any corner of the globe. It's an electro-Technicolor take on world music. "Killer Kumbia" and "Para No Vivir Desesperado" come to life via chirpy cumbia grooves, as does much of the disc; and Lara effectively samples rock outfit Cafe Tacuba during "El Microfono. " Lara's approach here is alternately serious and silly, combining nonsensical chatter with sly social statements. "A Todos Ellos" namechecks a long list of pop-culture icons, from Rocio Jurado, Sonny Bono, and R.L. Burnside, to Cantinflas, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and Oscar Wilde. The second half of the disc showcases more club-friendly grooves, and Pinata stand strong as an intriguing collection of pop revelry. --Joey Guerra

Album Description
Following the success of last year's debut "Mejico Maxico" is this infectious pastiche of electronica, dub, cha cha, and other musical surprises. Guests on "Pinata" include members of Tom Tom Club, Cornelius, and Babasonicos. In the past year, MIS received widespread acclaim from Spin, the NY Times, and Urb, as well as radio support from such tastemakers as KCRW (LA), Indie 103 (LA), KEXP (Seattle), and KUT (Austin). The band's music has also been featured in other projects including "Ugly Betty", in Dos Equis' national advertising campaign, on multiple soundtracks, and on the upcoming EA Games release "FIFA 2008".

5 out of 5 stars Fun Listening!   July 4, 2008

Not terribly long ago I purchased "Tijuana Sessions: Vol. 3." I loved it and followed up by ordering "Panoptica." It was equally good. Mexican Techno. I'd never heard of such a thing, but this was great music. I might indicate that I don't even like most Mexican music, but Mexican Techno is a world apart. Not long thereafter, the "Pinata" CD by the Mexican Institute of Sound started appearing on my list of recommendations. Out of curiosity, I bought it.

The "MIS/Pinata" CD is great stuff! I find it very hard to categorize the music. It's Latin to a much greater degree than the other albums mentioned and it's definitely electronica, but it's nothing like I've ever listened to and is a delight. It's a very strange and unusual album. All the lyrics are in Spanish, and I have no idea what they're about, but the Spanish lyrics present no problem at all in enjoying the music. This album is just fun music to listen to. How else can I put it?

The music is constructed in the electronica fashion, but it's much less mechanical and repetitious than most techno and sounds a lot more human, rather than something that's been generated by a computer. It presents a very strange mixture of sounds. I can hear synthesizers, door bells, a harp, chimes, the spoken word, strange voices and snippets of traditional Mexican music all mixed together with some very strange unidentified sounds and put into some very unusual arrangements. But, the end result is appealing and enjoyable music that is nothing like I've ever heard before. One critic called it "a remarkable collage," and that is an ideal description.

After listening to it several times, I tried to make a list of my favorite songs and my least favorites. It was an exercise in futility. No song stands out as the best and there's not a bad track on the album. This CD just provides fun listening!

1 out of 5 stars No creativity, lots of pre-productions tools used to create all the smash-ups   July 4, 2008

Basically this concept is composed by a bunch of music, arranged, smash, and played in different sequences. No creativity involved at all on this disc, the guys that orchestrates this effort is part its records company, so its has the ability to get a lot of music from different resources and smash it on different songs. Lyrics are terrible and they talk by themselves: no creativity, this is an effort to sell music. It's name "Pinata" says everything about its music: emptiness, well decorated product/music and more important, something that deserves to be broken.

Like the other MIS album, this one is very fun, exciting, and groovy. I'm greatly enjoying listening to it. I'm new to electronic music, but these albums are really, really good.

I loved the first Mexican Institute of Sound (MIS) album 'Mejico Maxico', but the new album 'Pinata' is even better. This album is worth the price alone just for tracks like "El Microfono" and "Escribeme Pronto". Big ups to KCRW in Los Angeles for turning me on to a great electronic artist!
