Yet another "Sky Is Crying"....April 11, 2004 Docendo Discimus(Vita scholae) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This BMG-collection is one of a handful of Elmore James-compilations titled "The Sky Is Crying". Rhino's disc remains the best, but this one is pretty good as well. The track list is not perfect (Elmore's best early Modern and Flair sides are missing), but most of his finest latter-day singles are included. "It Hurts Me Too" is not, unfortunately, but "The Sky Is Crying", "Look On Yonder Wall", "Dust My Broom", "Standing At The Crossroads", "Shake Your Money Maker", and "Mean Mistreatin' Mama" are all prime examples of Elmore James' intense, smouldering electric blues, all screaming slide guitar, braying tenor sax, and Elmore's huge, emotional voice.
A good collection of great music, but not the best one if you're looking for a place to start. 3 3/4 stars.
