Amazon.com When Elvis Presley's late-1960s comeback is discussed, talk generally centers on two events--his 1968 NBC-TV special and the recordings made in Memphis at American Studios shortly thereafter. There was actually a third key event--Presley's first Las Vegas engagement in 13 years (he flopped the first time), which kicked off at the brand-new International Hotel on July 31, 1969. The event is downplayed now since Vegas has become so synonymous with the King's decline--but this was a revitalized Presley, and, for the most part, he rocked. The white jumpsuits and "My Way" would come later; for this show, Presley wore a black karate suit and was backed by one of the hottest rockabilly bands on earth, with the legendary James Burton on lead guitar. Presley does early hits, Sun stuff, a Willie Dixon blues tune, and his latest singles ("In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds"). The furthest he steps outside his oeuvre is a cover of the Bee Gees' "Words." If only he'd continued in this vein. As it is, this stands with Onstage, February 1970 as his finest live recording. --Bill Holdship

elvis in person at the international hotel las vegas 1969 May 28, 2006 skip,a (fla.) This is elvis at his all time height,I myself saw elvis a number of times but always wished i saw the 69 vegas performences.Elvis never before or since sounded or performed better. The recordings from the same time period were also of Elvis" best.Unfortunatly, elvis would never perform or record anywhere near as good as he did in 1969,everyone was hopeing he would trash the glitz and schmultz and go back to the way he was here, but we all know the end of the story.
Elvis Live! July 14, 2005 Martin 13 (Slovenia) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I like the selections of songs. They are performed very well by Elvis well known live band (James Burton, Johnny Wilkinson and Charlie Hodge-guitar, Jerry Scheff-bass, Ronnie Tutt-drums and Larry Muhoberac-piano). This is his first live album. The songs are compiled from different concerts. Willie Dixon's My Babe, Medley: Mystery Train/Tiger Man and Bee Gees' Words are the songs that you can't find anywhere else. The only thing that I really don't like on this album is that it is too short. I Think RCA should release it as a double album or on two on one cd with album On Stage. After all the songs are from the same concerts.
His Best June 23, 2004 W. Pate (Glen Waverley, Victoria Australia) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Yes .. these were his best performance(s), marred only by the engineers mix which is just awful. Hopefully, one day we will get more tracks from 1969, properly mixed which would make this an all time best.

Many of Elvis Presley's latter-day concerts were marred by overblown production, mediocre arrangements, and a decidedly slick, Vegas-like feel, but the clumsily titled "Elvis In Person At The International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada" avoids those pitfalls on most of its twelve tracks. Backed by a fine, muscular rock n' roll band featuring guitarist James Burton, Presley and the band performs very well on songs like "All Shook Up", "Suspicious Minds", the gospel-like "Words", and a great R&B-styled "I Can't Stop Loving You" (which would have been ever better if the Imperials and the Sweet Inspirations, who provide backup vocals, would have shut up). "My Babe" is a surprisingly good attempt at a genuine blues song (credited to "Dickson", rather than "Dixon"), but unfortunately it starts to unravel half way through. Elvis rambles a lot during the spoken introductions, and a couple of songs are speeded up too much for their own good, causing them to lose their "groove" (an 80-second "Hound Dog" is a particularly bad example). And I've just never liked "Can't Help Falling In Love"; the melody is trite and predictable, and the lyrics are saccharine. But most of the twelve cuts are really good, and James Burton deserves a lot of credit for his gritty lead guitar playing. Not an essential purchase for casual fans, but a pretty good one nonetheless.
Elvis's Short Lived Comeback Peak February 1, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The 1968 Comeback Special was too brassy and was backed by corny TV sound. But this album from the very 1st season of Elvis's engagement in Vegas August 1969 is clutch. He wasn't sure he was going to make it so he put all he had into this show. He was dressed in black, thin, tan and healthy. He had incredible energy and focus. He has vicious precison in this album. Even the old songs snap with power. He kicks tail. After this season Elvis was never the same. He returned to Vegas in February 1970 playing much more sappy music. His old hits reduced to fast medleys. But this album he cared. There is a balance of romantic songs and some kick tail rock n' roll. He's incredibly impressive and the audience is stunned by his power. This is why he was called the King. His zenith only lasted one summer. His concerts from then on would become sloppy, forgotten words, old songs run through too fast. It sounds like he's on speed. This album is the way Elvis should have stayed, on top of his game, but he didn't. Blue Suede Shoes (Deadly Precision) Johnny B. Goode (Played like the 1st time, High Octane) All Shook Up (Kicks) Are You Lonsome Tonight Hound Dog (Slams) Can't Stop Loving You My Babe Mystery Train/Tiger Man (Attack) Words In The Ghetto Suspicious Minds Can't Help Falling In Love
