Somewhat of a Mixed Bag September 26, 2008 S. DuMoulin Elvis in Concert is the Soundtrack CD from the Television Special aired a couple of months after Elvis' death. I am an Elvis Tribute Artist and have been engaged in vocal training for the last 6 years. Because of that I can appreciate Elvis' voice and what he does with the songs perhaps better than most. The CD is a mixed-bag. On one hand you will hear one of the most powerful voices outside of an Opera Singer at the upper range of Elvis' voice which hits a High B at the end of the song Hurt. Elvis is a baritone but he is a very high baritone and has tremendous power which is dramatically evident at the Medium High and High ranges. Other examples of this will be heard on You Gave Me a Mountain which has a distinctly revival meeting feel to it, How Great thou Art, My Way, Can't Help Falling in Love (the ending) etc. On the other hand Elvis' voice is unbalanced in the middle range and middle high range from time to time and he even goes flat for a moment on Hawaiian Wedding Song. There are times in this range where he sounds weak. Parts of Hurt are a good example of this. The health issues that would take his life a couple of months later are evidently weighing very heavily on him. If you are a die-hard Elvis fan I would definitely purchase this CD. There are still moments of magic that only Elvis could create.
EXCITING PERFORMANCE November 14, 2007 Luis Castro Jr. (Miami, Florida) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Elvis Presley's vocals are impressive on Hurt and How Great Thou Art. I find his voice to have reached an operatic tone that is very pleasant to listen to. His band is in excellent form playing strong and creating excitement with their superb musicianship. The recording quality of this performance is noticeable compared to his other live recordings. Stands out more perhaps due to the advancing technology of the instrument playing equipment. This is an excellent performance as are all of Elvis Presley's live albums. This one and An Afternoon In The Garden are two of my personal favorites.
"Elvis has left the building......." October 19, 2007 W.R. Ranger 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although he sounds more in tune and focused on other more acclaimed live recordings ('An Afternoon At The Garden', 'Aloha From Hawaii'), I enjoy this album for the song selections. Especially the gospel songs. Also, I like this because of how Elvis projects his voice. Such as on "How Great Thou Art" and "Hurt". He couldn't move as well so he had to rely more on his voice. The recording of "Love Me" on this album is my favorite compared to previous live material. "You Gave Me A Mountain", "If You Love Me Let Me Know", "My Way", "Hound Dog", are "Jailhouse Rock" all come off excellently. The band is great and I did like the interjection of fan comments throughout album. Just a reminder that even in his final days the fans were steadfast and true. The only thing that was disappointing was that several of the songs are cut short. He just doesn't up and quit singing. It's just he cuts out verses of some songs or the tempo is quick and some songs are only a minute long. This may have had something to do with the fact that his stamina was weakening in his final years. Besides that it is an overall enjoyable listen and a definite addition for any Elvis collection. I read that EPE has been hesitant to release the video of 'Elvis In Concert' do to the expected criticism and sarcasm his apperance would receive from nonfans and media. As a fan, and being to young to remember the CBS broadcast, I would like to see it released someday.
Elvis In Concert April 12, 2007 Frank D. Ireland (frankland) Any true Elvis fan should have this CD. It contains the songs from the 1977 CBS special, which was Elvis' final concert (Kansas City & Rapid City, if memory serves). It even includes the message from Elvis' father, who is thanking everyone for the cards & letters that they sent after Elvis' death. It also has a lot of other live songs that were not in the TV special. I love it...
Good bye Elvis February 21, 2007 Blues Bro (Lakewood, Colorado USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This CD includes highlights from two of Elvis last shows (although not his last one, which was not recorded). These were not special and were never meant to be issued as an album, but Elvis death a few weeks later change that. So, to begin with, these shows were not recorded properly. The idea was to make just a TV show and after Elvis death, this 'soundtrack' was released. There are some great moments, some awkard moments and some sad moments on this CD. If you are an Elvis fan (you have more than 10 CDs already) you need this of course. Otherwise, make sure you first buy some Elvis Live in his prime, any shows from 68-72 will do. Even thouigh Elvis at times sounds like he is barely there, just mumbling the lyrics, he could still sing 'Hurt', 'My Way' and 'How great thou art' and prove that Elvis had it even in his last days.
