Strangers Revamped April 2, 2007 Wild Colonial Boy (England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Reviewers seem to be confusing this 2-disc set from Vienna with the 4-disc box set. This copy of the Vienna concert is good value and essentially the best part of the 4-disc version (in effect another copy of the 'Werewolves of London' set). Two thirds of the stuff here is just "Strangers" revamped, notable additions being the "Walk on Water" tracks which are performed really well live. Even though the performance is fraught with mistakes the sound quality is good and encapsulates a lot more raw power than "Strangers". This is a nice addition to any UFO collection but I still prefer "Strangers in the Night" for it's perfection or the "BBC Sessions/Live In Concert" from earlier in their career.
Another good live CD but a bit unexpected... September 19, 2005 Chris Jordan (Surrey, B.C. Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The sound production is soundboard. I don't think this recording ever saw the inside of a studio for editing. Having said that, it is a pretty good soundboard recording. It has a very raw appeal to it with a bitter mixing of the bass, which was really lost on the "Werewolves of London" CD. It is well balanced for the most part and sounds very different than most live CD's you'll find. It literally sounds like you're right in the bar in Vienna, Austria where it was recorded. It was performed at a small venue. The setlist is awesome. It has all the classic tracks and the best from "Walk on Water". I say the best from Walk on Water, but Walk on Water doesn't really have a bad song. The whole CD is good. Overall, although "Strangers" is more professionally recorded, Live in Vienna is somehow very appealing. At this point, it is my UFO CD of choice, had I to pick one. Everyone in the band sounds pretty good and the UFO classics do not lend themselves to anyone but Phil Mogg on vocals. He does well.
UFO ! August 5, 2005 jjjingleheimer (Rochester, NY USA) Wow! Quite simply, this album rocks. The band is in fine form and Mogg's voice in top shape. Sound quality is excellent. One knock on this album is Rock Bottom. My most beloved UFO tune pales here in comparison to the Strangers version IMHO. On RB, Herr Schenker seems to be noodling around with some harmonic notes rather than just ripping. Just a minor complaint really. Rock and roll like this never goes out of style. Loved the disc one, track one "Faith Healer' intro tribute to The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Highly recommended. This is a two disc set. Other reviewer's were discussing a third and fourth disc? Must have been repackaged since the reviews.
Could Be Their Best ! June 29, 2005 R. Williams (Hope Hull, Alabama United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you love UFO Live (Strangers in the Night). You will never play it again after you hear this CD. It could be their absolute BEST!
Best live since 79. November 2, 2004 James P. Witherell (Orlando!) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Easily the best the band has sounded live since "Strangers in the Night". Problem is it could be a better recording. I'm not talking remixes just quality. At times it sounds like a soundboard recording. But.... Michaels playing is really good with some very weird but hot licks (maybe it was the French Impressionist mustach and black hair he was sporting) Definately worth buying.
