Editorial Reviews:

This enormous live box set is a necessity for the hardcore Metallifan, though casual fans (if Metallica has any casual fans) might be scared off. It contains material up to and including the self-titled "black" album, including concert favorites "Creeping Death" and "Seek & Destroy," as well as classics like "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," and "Fade to Black." There are also a couple of ripping-fast solos from Jason Newsted and Kirk Hammett, and covers of "Last Caress," "Am I Evil?" and "Stone Cold Crazy." The videos are from a 1992 San Diego concert and a 1989 stop on the Damaged Justice tour in Seattle; both are guaranteed to turn any fan who hasn't had the considerable pleasure of hearing this seminal metal band live green with envy. Pricey, but very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams

Album Description
Convenient new size...Still f***ing huge! Metallica's Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge - the unprecendented box set featuring three complete concerts on three CD's and three VHS tapes, more than eight hours of live Metallica - is now being made available on three CD's and two DVD's at a special price. This colossal box has sold an incredible 613,000 copies since its 1993 release, and this reissue is sure to swell the ranks of those blown away by these shows. Nothing gets left behind -- the complete original 72-page full-color book is even included on DVD 2, and the commemorative backstage pass and scary guy stencil are enclosed as well. It's a one-two-three punch unmatched by any band, before or since, and the perfect gift for that special someone who needs their ass kicked hard by the world's greatest rock & roll band.

5 out of 5 stars There is a reason it is still high priced--IT IS WORTH IT!   May 11, 2008

This set is the Best Metallica concert set I have ever purchased. When it originally was released it was only available in VHS format with a choice of C.D. or cassette for the Mexico City concert, now it is finally on DVD.

All the concert footage presented here proves why Metallica became Rock Gods. Although I have not purchased the last few Metallica albums since they changed their style, I still purchased this set and was very pleased. Only problem was with the stencil and booklet, I prefered the larger size stuff that came with the original boxset; however, the concert footage is still legendary.

My favorite is still the Seattle "And Justice For All" show. This set proves why people who went to see Ozzy Osbourne on his "The Ultimate Sin" tour were really there to see opening act Metallica who were suppoting their Master Of Puppets effort. The stage is explosive with pyrotechniques and Metallica literally destroy the entire stage before ending the show. This alone reminded me of seeing Kiss in their heyday. Best of all they play the full version of "Master Of Puppets" and not the shortened version they have been playing the last few years. Another Gem on this video is the live version of "Breadfan." By far better than the version of "Stone Cold Crazy" that is featured on the "San Diego" set.
But even San Diego is worth mentioning.

Starting with the 20 min. Metallimovie This is basically a review of 2 1/2 years in the life of Metallica redone, then the set blows open with Enter Sandman and you are off and running. After this the set seems to slow down and becomes the Metallica we have heard the last few years (then again I did not like the Black album as well as I did the older albums with exception of "Enter Sandman") The real Gem of this show though is seeing Lars Ulrich and James Helfield dualing on Drums. Plus it is 3 1/2 hours of Metallica Live!

The two CD set of Mexico City is good but not great. The solos are overdone and way too long, good thing you can skip them now. I normally bypass this part of the set. But it was fun playing the unmentioned live version of "So What" to my friends before it became a (Censored) radio regular. So why did I give this set a 5 star review? Because all video taped concerts have their problems, but this concert set is still one of the best produced ones available today.

Skip the other Metallica videos and buy this one. It is the only concert you will need. I should know I just purchased my third copy.

4 out of 5 stars Pudo ser mejor   April 29, 2008

SEE YAA!!!

4 out of 5 stars Rip roaring live offering   January 4, 2008
Paul Lawrence (Australia)
Not much of a live album fan myself. But sometimes the versions on live albums can sound more full blooded than some creaky studio take from circa 1976. And sometimes you'll get a song that really comes alive on stage. But every now and again one comes along that even I'll feel obliged to pick up and this is one of them.

Metallica sure had the history and the catalogue to put on a fine performance come live album time. And they prove it on this triple CD spread (ha, beat that you old 70's live albums you!). Going into critical minutia is sort of pointless - just look at the track listing and it'll speak for itself. What I would like to point out are a couple of aspects that may sway your decision.

Firstly the production values are good. Traditional, heavy and full range. Secondly pretty much all the bands hits are here - it really is a good collection of tunes and very indicative of their live experience (saw the tour for the black album in Sydney, Australia) and if you can filter out James' rather pathetic and annoying between song banter then it pretty much shows the band as a well oiled machine ripping it up, swerving all over their back catalogue in search of the next circle pit anthem.

Thirdly this release is a darn good representation of the pre Load era Metallica. There is the live DVD Cunning Stunts that came out some years later, but to my knowledge that wasn't accompanied by a straight CD release. So in the same way that Iron Maidens Live at Donnington could be seen to be the culmination of their rise and rise through the 80's this can also be viewed as an excellently timed summation of where Metallica were at as a live band at the culmination of their own rise to world dominance. Or at the least the metal community.

So there you go, my critical two cents worth and overall my advice is to buy it especially if you can score it cheap as if your a fan of the band you won't be disappointed in the slightest.

5 out of 5 stars the best of MetallicA   November 23, 2007
Angela (New Jersey)
this was the one thing that got me into MetallicA in 2003 (well...lets just make it clear that i was born in the 90s) and it is absolutely one of the best things the band has released.

HOURS of concert amazing footage this boxset offers. i mean what else can you possibly ask for? it cannot get better than this. i'd say this is the best concert release i will ever own. taking place in the late 80s and early 90s, this shows james, kirk, jason (i miss him a whole lot...so unfortunate to have him leave the band...IMO rob's okay, but not as good as jason), and lars at their best.

this is something every Metallica fans should have. the ultimate boxset. every second of it is highly enjoyable. i HIGHLY recommend this
