Awesome Live Album June 27, 2004 B. Fanciulli (United States) This and Destruction's "Live Without Sense" are the best live thrash albums of the 80's. Ancient Romantic-like artwork on the original cover depicting hedonistic nudes initially kept the album out of distribution in the US and a censored version was issued with an all black cover and the "Sodom" logo in very small print. This made the album unappealing to those less familiar with the band and the popularity of the album suffered as a result. The newer CD cover is slightly better (at least it has the name of the album) and features the original artwork inside.Nevertheless, this album captures Sodom in brutal form. Witchhunter's drumming is insane--he pounds out the songs so furiously that the rest of the band is often slightly behind. With the speed of an automatic rifle and exciting time changes, the drumming is definitely the highlight. Extended guitar and drum solos are featured. The vocals are very crisp and sound more Hardcore than Thrash, especially the chorus. For the first time, we get a good dose of frontman Angelripper's bass leads which up until this album had been restricted to mostly rhythm. If you can find it, I recommend the "Mortal Way of Live" video as well. Though it is not recorded from the same sets and is a little sloppier, it is classic.
Classic Mid 80's German Thrash! June 11, 2004 Edward J. Holmes (Demotte, Indiana United States) "Mortal Way of Live" is a classic thrasher. Full of speedy guitars, blasting drums and venomous vocals, Sodom's live performance isn't that bad. Is it tight? Mmmm...somewhat. Sloppy? Yes, but in a good way. Is it Heavy? Definetly. Sodom was one of the heaviest bands I had heard at that time. The album really doens't have a wimpy sound to it at all. Full steam ahead the whole way. The cd also has a good track list. Real heavy metal fans will remember songs like, "Bombenhogel, Sodomy and Lust, Obsessed by Cruelty and My Atonement, all of which are classics. Ok, to the point...If you like bands like Slayer, Venom, Grave and Motorhead, this is right up your alley.
Too heavy for most June 27, 2000 jon wm. shaw (Manassas Va.) Nothing they could do in the studio could ever match the intensity of their live shows. This is a great mix of live recordings, especially "Nuclear Winter" and "Bombenhagel", which was always a crowd favorite, you will have to hear that one to beleive it. Politics aside, this is a really good, heavy band that never got the recognition that it deserved.
