Amazon.com essential recording Opening with a few bars of Stravinsky to set the adoring crowd on its feet, this once-three-LP set is Yes at their finest. This was, after all, probably the most mainstream act that had even provisional "prog rock" status, and their tunes show it. While "Heart of the Sunrise" may be one of the more modestly titled Yes songs (compare it with "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" or "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)" or even "Total Mass Retain"), it also bears marks of the band playing at its most frenetic pace around Jon Anderson's soaring near-falsetto. Rick Wakeman's grand synthesizer flashes are more than textural, finding visual meshes aplenty with Roger Dean's cryptic cover art--most of which is shrunken or absent on this two-CD reissue. When Yessongs was cut, Marshall stacks were in their heyday, and Yes happily engaged in harmonic and melodic excessiveness as well as carefully planned layers of complexity. "Roundabout" was the band's biggest hit to this point. It appears here faithfully reproduced. As for the rest, it's entertaining in a 1970s way--full of light shows, staged visuals, and more. It took a few years for prog rock to dwindle and for punk-colored art rock to swerve toward songs about buildings and food. On Yessongs, the band was peaking, singing songs with far grander purpose (Siberia, the Apocalypse, etc.). By any account, this is one of the classic live albums of its generation, and as the soundtrack to the hip 1998 film Buffalo 66 hinted, at least one manic Yes song ("Heart of the Sunrise") passed muster for drama in the 1990s. --Andrew Bartlett

Brilliant Masterpiece !!! November 9, 2008 Monkey Business (New York) I can't believe I was 13 when this came out and I was at the record store laying out grass cutting money for my first and only 3 record set. The music seemed so complicated back then but I was very drawn to it-listening again and again. I knew I was in the presence of genius and that hasn't changed one bit in all these years. By far my favorite Yes recording.
The best Close to the edge Wakeman solo out there October 24, 2008 Ignacio Cuevas (Mexico) Great album, not the better sound Eddie Offord could get after the superb studio sounds he got before this, but wait, wakeman's solo on Close to the edge is way better than on the studio album. Soundwise Keys to ascension 1 is the best recorded Yes yet, and also live at Montreux has great sound.
This is it! July 14, 2008 Michael L. Dunn, Jr. (Nashua, NH) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
... the best album in the history of recorded music. Sit back, relax and enjoy!
Best Live Album Ever! February 28, 2008 Michael L. Ellingson (Rancho Cucamonga, CA United States) This is not only Yes's best album, but the best live album of all time! Very well recorded, and full of energy. It's amazing to hear Yes play their complicated music live, and sound like the studio version (no over dubbing here) as a matter of fact, I prefer these live tracks to their studio counterparts, more raw energy! I played the vinyl the death, and still have it, I love the new remastered CD. If you like progressive music and don't have this album, what's wrong with you!
Classic LIVE recording! January 14, 2008 JR Media Freak (Wisconsin) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am not a big fan of LIVE recordings. I tend to stay with the studio works of my favorite artists. However, with a band like Yes, I continue to be drawn to their music, and with no new music out...I turned to live recordings. This is one of the best compilations of live music by a band. The performances here are top notch, and the remastered version helps flavor the sound in a sparkling clear manner. Classic Yes tunes played live from the tour supporting Close To The Edge LP, the Prog-Rock group's classic rock high point. If you like Yes, then this album is a must have! Or if you like Yes and have Classic Yes CD, then this is essentially the Live version of that album. This is more or less a best of type compilation, but the live performances here prove to everyone that Yes on tour sounded just as good as they did in the studio!
