Unbelievable guitar player April 22, 2008 Christopher Hivner (Dallastown, PA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you like virtuoso guitar playing and long complicated soloing, then Frank Marino is for you. The man's fingers fly over the strings. He has a deep, rich tone to his guitar and plays in a style that is a blend of blues and 70s trippiness. His band Mahogany Rush is a solid one but are really just there to provide backup to Frank's majestic guitar playing. On this CD he does originals with old standards like Johnny B. Good, Purple Haze and the blues classic I'm a King Bee. Frank never had the knockout career other guitar gods had and now most people don't remember him, but he is an amazing musician.
This album changed my life!! February 25, 2008 G Money (Md usa) Seriously. A friend turned me on to this in 77 and blew my mind. Frank has never gotten the props he deserves. I've seen him live through all of the years (as recently as 5 months ago. Still unbelievable) and turned many people on to him. The reaction is always the same...once they pick their jaw up off the floor, they are forever with us. If you like guitar playing you better have this album in your collection or you know nothing.
Scorching Guitar work October 1, 2007 Kirk B. Smith (Melb, Australia) Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live, takes me back to the early 80's growing up in Melbourne Australia.Been a guitar fan l heard this and became a big fan, songs like The Answer and Drangonfly really are works of great funk and color. Marino builds and pushes the boundries of feedback and echo, with a very tight band. I purchased this after looking everywhere in Melbourne, a great CD from a great time, if you love bluesy rock guitar this will blow you away....
I'd give it 10 stars if I could. July 13, 2007 David Porter (Tucson) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For years this was the only Frank Marino album I had. I just figured that it doesn't get any better than this. Well recently FM proved me wrong. "RealLIVE" is more than twice the length of this and every bit as worthy, if not better. Having said that, "Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live" will never grow old. Here is an excellent mix of originals and blues covers. Far from growing tedious with repeated listens, this still stands as a high water mark for any band and exactly what you'd expect from an accomplished player and song writer like Marino.
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live May 12, 2007 Mark Bass (Skiatook, OK United States) First rate recording with lots of nods to its rock and roll roots. Touches of Santana, the Doors, Hendrix and many other pioneers of rock can be found by the careful listener. The guitar work is flawless and Purple Haze says it all. A definite "add" recommendation for any serious rock and roll collector.
