| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com essential recording Il Giardino Armonico is an original instruments group made up of skilled young Italian specialists in Baroque music. They bring a light, airy touch to the Brandenburg Concertos, with deeply felt slow movements, sprightly Allegros, and blistering Prestos. Unlike some of their ilk, they play with vitality while avoiding interpretive extremes; the finale of No.3, for example, is taken at a blistering pace but never feels too fast for the music. Solos are highly accomplished, with scintillating violin and wind contributions, along with charmingly blatty period horns in No. 1. The engineering is a big plus, helping to make this one of the best period performances of these perennial favorites. --Dan Davis

A must-have Brandenburg September 24, 2008 Peter Brawley This became my favourite Brandenburg set on first hearing. The baroque horns in #1 sounded a bit rough till I remembered what horn technology was like in 1720-something. By the Andante in #2, I was pretty much in a swoon. Gorgeous. The playing is electrifying. The sound stage is rendered with exquisite clarity. Lyricism, depth, precision, perfect tonality, wit, and energy, what energy! And the more I hear it, the better I like it. Get it for yourself. You won't regret it. Note: The 2007 Das Alte Werk edition is two thirds the price of the original.
Best by Far! April 29, 2008 Gil Mosko (Van Nuys, CA United States) Like many people, I have a collection of several versions of the Brandenburgs, and have heard many more. While I respect all good, solid performances, this recording really stands above all the others. The dynamics of the room it was recorded in, the microphone placement and engineering are phenomenal. I love the untempered natural horns. There is a bite to them that is exciting. I must credit Maestro Antonini with breathing life into this performance. The musicianship is fabulous, and the overall sound is truly wonderful.
Brandenburg Concertos-Il Giardino Armonico January 20, 2008 All Ears 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This two-CD Teldec recording is a joy. It has the feel of an all-out, let-'er-rip performance. Il Giardino Armonico is the ensemble recommended to me by a member of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He was right--all six concertos are gems--nothing ho-hum here! Amazon's service is unbeatable. During the Christmas rush, the CDs arrived a day earlier than promised. Many thanks to all from A Delighted Listener!
Bad First Cut August 7, 2007 Paul A. Renard (Pleasant Hill, California USA) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
First selection, Concerto I in F major is horrible. Horn players are so bad I thought the track was defective. The rest of the CD is okay, and good if you appreciate period instruments. Tempi are good. I personally like the Boston Baroque with Martin Pearlman, 1994 Telarc, better.
Lush, melodic, beautiful September 9, 2006 Wendy M. (Charleston, SC USA) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful example of the Brandenburg Concertos played on period instruments. It is full of life, probably the best rendition I have heard of these concertos. The words "lush" and "melodic" do not do it justice. Giovanni is a master of the recorder - his technique is wonderful and sounds so effortless! My husband is hooked on this CD and he is not a big fan of classical music, and my boss, who likes the bigger sounds of Wagner and big symphonic bands loved this CD. I, myself, am a lover of the more intimate sound of chamber music, baroque and renaissance music. This is one of my all time favorite recordings. A must for your collection!!
