Amazon.com Completed by George Harrison's son Dhani and Jeff Lynne (Traveling Wilburys, Cloud Nine) after the ex-Beatle succumbed to a long illness in November 2001, Brainwashed is a bittersweet reminder of the myriad contradictions that made Harrison such a compelling figure. One of the most warm, melodically rich albums in a career pockmarked by personal frankness and professional indifference in its latter years, Harrison finds rewarding ways here to reconcile bitter assessments of the material world (the title track) with more fleshly concerns, as his jaunty take on the Arlen-Koehler chestnut "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" ably demonstrates. Pushing the singer's distinctive dry voice to the forefront, and with Harrison's trademark slide guitar riffs as sinewy as ever, Lynne's showcase production is mostly spot-on and refreshingly restrained, while Dhani brings his own fresh, touchingly personal insights to the record. He double-tracked his own voice onto an old recording of his father chanting the traditional "Namah Parvati" and appended it as the album's spiritual benediction, a touching reminder that while musicians come and go, music can truly embody their spirit forever. --Jerry McCulley

5 Stars are not enough! September 10, 2008 Charles Dunn (Alvin, TX U.S.A.) George's final album and probably his finest overall. I love guitars, ukeleles, and clear sounding classic rock. With lyrics rivaling Bob Dylan's and Georges inward looking spiritual insights 'Brainwashed' is my favorite Beatle solo album. It took 15 years to complete in Harrison's home studio with help from Jimmy Lee Keltner and Jeff Lynne. I play this cd sparingly since I suspect it will have to be enjoyed over the balance of my life time. I've read that Dhani Harrison and Jeff Lynne have another album's worth of unissued material. What are they saving it for?
An Excellent Album (Yes, I said Album) August 2, 2008 Dr. Winston O'Boogie 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great album! I think it is easily George's second best album and maybe even his very best. It is hard to compare it to All Things Must Pass because it was a "classic" album of a different time period. ATMP is great, but I don't listen to it repeatedly as I do "Brainwashed". If you love George or The Beatles, you should already own this album (CD). George was great and he left a wonderful gift for everyone.
excellent last effort with a little help from his friends June 9, 2008 Mark L. Barnes This is my 4th favorite George effort. I rate Cloud 9 #1; All things must pass #2; George Harrison #3. I so wish George was still with us. He was at his prime when he did Cloud 9 and was part of the Traveling Wilbury's. Love you George and miss you
I liked it March 30, 2008 Rodney S. Allen (LA,CA) Releasaed after his death it has a familiar Harrison sound. An enjoyable album to cap the career of a great musician.
A Fond Farewell to George Harrison December 30, 2007 Michael Rapson 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
While not as prolific as MacCartney, George made solid, thoughtful albums. Many of his songs featured distinctive near-celestial chords and rhythmical passages. This posthumous album was obviously not quite finished. However, it has some wonderful highlights even though one can detect the strain in the voice at times, which is sad. George was no people-pleaser when he wrote his own songs as a solo artist. His cutting political and social commentaries were also present on this recording, including his dig at the corrupution of the papacy ("P2 Vatican Blues") and key aspects of the establishment ("Brainwashed"). Favourite tracks include "Any Road", "Looking for my Life", "Rising Sun", "Stuck inside a Cloud" and "Never get over You". Objectively, a boderline 4 stars rating from me. See you in the 851st dimension, George.
