Another Soulful Album from the great Anita Baker July 10, 2008 MizKyGirl (Waukegan, IL, USA) If you loved "Rapture" or "The Songstress," you'll love "Giving You the Best That I Got" by the great and soulful Anita Baker. This album has an excellent mix of soul, jazz, and a little bit of bossa-nova. Here's my review of my favorite songs by Anita from this album. 1.) Good Love: This is my favorite song off the album. It's so jazzy and soulful. 2.) Leading Me Into Love: I love how the song starts out a little slow and then has a upbeat tempo throughout the song. 3.) Giving You the Best That I Got: Another great jazzy song. It's so smooth and relaxing. 4.) Good Enough: This song has a mixture of smooth soul with a bossa-nova beat. If you like Anita Baker, I'd recommend this album along with her other two albums "The Songstress" and "Rapture." Like I've said before, you won't be disappointed.
ON ALBUM NUMBER 3 ANITA BAKER DELIVERED YET ANOTHER HIT! December 8, 2007 Mr. Nightshift (Los Angeles, CA) Not as strong her first two previous releases, but this held it's own, and still proved that she was here to stay! She had a #1 Hit with the Title Track, a Top Ten R&B Smash with "Just Because". This project includes Album Favorites: "Good Love" & "Lead Me Into Love". Although this project only had 8 Tracks, I'm pretty sure the wasn't about to kill album sells with pulling a Third Single, but when everything was said and done Anita Baker had another Top Selling Gold Album!!!
An continuation of excellence... May 24, 2007 NDBx (New York, NY United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In this recording Anita Baker continues her unique, emotionally filled ballad style. Now when I say this, understand that these songs are distinct from Rapture. No veiled repeated progressions or formulas. These pieces are of the same high quality though. Once again Anita conveys the sense of passionate romance with a magnificent voice. Songs filled with longing. She is well accompanied by top flight musicians and the outstanding vocal quartet: Perri, i.e. the Perry sisters from Bakersfield, California. The provide a solid vocal background with rich harmonies, never intrusive, but with rich textures. "Lead Me Into Love", "Just Because", "I Want to Know What Good Love Is" are highpoints and they draw you in. Anita is this rare in that you can simply listen to that rich, full voice and enjoy it and normally I am the type to simply be content with that. Yet the thing is that she uses that voice to great effect to convey so much emotion. With a voice like hers, many a singer could fall back on it and you might have some nice ballads, but nothing truly engaging. Anita engages you and invests her self in the song that while impressive for her technique, never loses her accessibility. Another must-have recording.
GOING BACK TO A GENTLER, KINDER TIME! December 29, 2005 Gregory White (Palmdale CA (USA)) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is Anita's finest album ever. You can feel the love this lady has for her husband. Ms Anita Baker has brought "love" back from the 80s to a much-needed timeframe of the "now and ever so hateful" new millenium! Anita takes me back to a time when the Black woman loved to be put a pedestal..have her toes kissed..to be loved, caressed & courted..to be worshipped. The 80s were a time when a Black man, like Anita's man, wasn't considered "weak" because he is loving man. Thank you Anita for sharing the love you have for your man, and reminding Black women everywhere that a man who is kindhearted like me should not be made fun-of or spat-upon, but rather admonished, uplifted and respected. Thank you, Ms Baker for great hits like "Giving You the Best I Got" & "Precious"--reminders that genuine love still does exists amongst the often dark & turid background of today's mindset of "Girl, get him before he gets you" and "We're going to eat you nice guys alive". Thank you for that wonderful voyage through time when the good Black men had the love of our Black women.
An essential album for all true jazz and R&B fans. September 8, 2005 Justo Roteta (Los Angeles, California United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This all-time classic was one of 1988's truly superior R&B albums. At a time when most Urban R&B was losing its soulfulness and essence at an alarming rate, Baker (thankfully) refused to compromise her artistry and talents--in the end, she came up with a real winner in every way. "Just Because", "Lead Me Into Love", "Priceless", "Good Love" and the title track are timeless ballads from one of the greatest R&B and jazz DIVAS of all time.
