Obviously not for everyone...but I think it kicks ass April 25, 2006 Jason Phillips (Corona, CA USA) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
As an owner of many SACDs (multichannel, stereo, hybrid and non-hybrid), I would have to say that this SACD is better than most but not as good as a small few. Sure, they (the record company) perhaps could have made this multichannel...but would it have sounded as true? For instance, take Friday Night in San Francisco (DiMeola, McLaughlin, DeLucia). This SACD is not hybrid, and is mixed in Stereo, yet it is one of the truest to life musical reproductions I have ever heard. Boston's self-entitled album is a 70s classic. When I received this SACD from Amazon, I went straight home and blasted it on my system with all the windows open. My wife left for the grocery store as Foreplay started playing at extreme volume. I actually listened to this SACD three times that evening, with each time better than the last. If you don't like Boston, then this SACD isn't for you. On a decent system this SACD sounds great...on an exceptional system, this SACD sounds awesome.

only 2 good songs April 21, 2006 whirligig (bakersfield ca) 0 out of 17 found this review helpful
I really don't like boston that much. they are kind of overrated and lousy. One of the worst songs I have ever heard is More than a feeling and i don't get it why people like it. The only 2 good songs are Foreplay, and Smokin. The rest of this is junk. I love the cover anyway.

I've been on a binge since getting my SACD player. I finally chose SACD over DVD-A because of the number of titles and the availability of hybrids. I bought 10 titles in my first few weeks. It was astounding: every time I bought an SACD title and popped it in the player, I was blown away by hearing something amazing. Gaucho.... The Stranger.... Dark Side Of The Moon.... It was like a drug. I hadn't spent this much money on music in ages. I had an unbroken streak of being gobsmacked. Then I got to this title. Don't get me wrong, the album is awesome and the music itself is incredible. But it doesn't sound that different from the re-mastered CD. Then I saw the words "Stereo". Here are three reasons why I believe I'm entirely justified in feeling shafted: 1> My SACD system cost a lot of money. If I can get a dramatically different experience, then I want one. That's what I'm paying for. 2> If 2 channels are better then 5.1 for this particular recording, PROVIDE BOTH MIXES! The technology is right there in the format. 3> I know with every fiber of my being that the record companies will eventually put out a 5.1 mix ANYWAY, meaning I will be expected to buy this album AGAIN. This whole experience left a very bitter taste in my mouth. It was like buying one of those super-crappy DVDs that were mastered from NTSC sources: if everything were this quality, there'd be no need for DVD. Likewise without multi-channel mixes, there is no real need for SACD; hi-def is not enough to make the purchase worth it. So now I'm on notice: Not all SACDs are 5.1. Allow me to put record companies on notice: I see no need to buy a stereo SACD. EVER!
Fool me once, shame on you March 3, 2005 Dexbet (Colchester, Vermont United States) 11 out of 20 found this review helpful
...This had the SACD logo sticker on the cover and the way the logo is designed, implied that this was in 5:1. Shame on you. It is in stereo. I have always enjoyed this album that came out when I was in high school and have a stereo copy already. When I saw it in the SACD section of Best Buy, I thought it would be the livin end to have it in surround sound! It was a severe disappointment to see that it says Stereo in small letters on the back after I had opened it already. If I hadn't opened it, I would have returned it. Why bother putting out a SACD if it is only in stereo???
