You may not know Nightwish yet, but the Finnish goth-orchestral-metal band is a phenomenon throughout the rest of the world. The group's fifth album, the platinum-certified Once, hit #1 over the summer on the Pan-European charts, and stayed there for three weeks. Behind them? The Beastie Boys, Avril Lavigne, Norah Jones and Usher, among others. So who or what is this band? On first listen, Nightwish seems to fall into the same genre as Evanescence, Lacuna Coil and the Gathering--female-fronted metal band with symphonic and gothic overtones. But any similarities end there. First of all, singer Tarja Turunen may be the only trained opera singer in metal, and her vocal prowess and range prove it. Then there's the rest of the group, led by keyboardist and primary songwriter Tuomas Holopainen. Listen closely, and you'll hear a group that's equally influenced by opera, classical music, Euro-metal, early thrash and even Kate Bush.Nightwish formed as, of all things, an acoustic-based band in Kitee, Finland in 1997, though they quickly switched to a hard rock sound. Within a year the group had released its debut album, Angels Fall Fast, which featured the first hit single, "The Carpenter." Their second release, Oceanborn, landed in the Top Five in Finland, and featured three hit singles. By the time Wishmaster came out in 2000, Nightwish was a top concert draw and one of the most critically acclaimed metal bands in all of Europe. Thanks to the on-going buzz, the group was also able to land U.S. distribution for the first time. Nightwish's 4th studio effort came in the form of Century Child, which was the product of one of the most tumultuous periods in the band's career. It marked the grand entrance of Marco Hietala, a metal icon in his own right in his homeland. With Hietala's dual contribution to the band (bass and backing vocals), they were able to put forth some of their darkest, most aggressive material ever.But Once is Nightwish's breakthrough, both in its epic scope and brilliant songwriting. Disgruntled Metallica fans may find a new axe-god in Emppu Vuorinen, who has quickly become one of the most brutal (and tech-savvy) guitarists in metal. Behind him is a seamless blend of top-notch musicianship and orchestral bombardment (much of which is provided by The Academy of St. Martins in the Field, who scored the Lord of the Rings trilogy). The chart-topping single "Nemo" is a monster, building slowly from a simple piano line and molten guitar riff into an over-the-top, orchestral breakdown. Thanks to Turunen's vocals, the song also possesses a haunted quality that modern-day metal often fails to achieve.Forget formula--the band doesn't have one. Subtle electronic beats color "Wish I Had an Angel," while tribal drums shape the eight-plus minute "Creek Mary's Blood." There's the aptly titled "Ghost Love Score," which sounds like a great, lost Danny Elfman soundtrack. Then, on the other side, is the rough-and-tumble "Romanticide," a violent kiss-off that ends with bassist / back-up singer Hietala scowling "Spit on me, let go, get rid of me / And try to survive your stupidity" over one of the most headbanging riffs of the last five years.So, are you ready for Nightwish?

I first heard the song "Wish I had an Angel" in the movie "Alone in the Dark" with Christian Slater, and I bought this CD, this was my first cd of their's, and I fell in love with it, their sound is extremely remarkable. I was kind of shocked when I heard thru the grapevine that Tarja was fired, because she has a different, and unique sound all her own, and the music just worked with her voice. Annette is awesome, but Tarja is her own, and she own's it. In this cd "Ghost Love Score", and the rest of the music on this cd has a unique Native American sound to it, and you can really appreciate it. This is one of their greatest accomplishments. Next to "Century Child" in which Tarja put's her own gothic spin to "Phantom of the Opera", well done...

I first heard of this band after one of my friends found out I was a fan of the female fronted rock band Evanescence. As an expert on symphonic metal, my friend let me borrow his copy of this album, and I was blown away. Although I still love Evanescence, Nightwish easily outclasses them in orchastration and complexity, creating a rich gothic atmosphere that is hard to surpass. Fans of Amy Lee's excellent vocals will fall in love with Tarja Turrunen, whose operatic vocals give this album a unique mixture combined with the heavy metal sound.
This album catches your attention right from the opening number, Dark Chest of Wonders,before going into the heavier track, Wish I Had an Angel. It then goes into Nemo, a beautiful and slow building rock ballad which is the song most likely to catch a mainstream audiences's attention. The rest of the songs on this CD are amazing, the standouts being Creek Mary's Blood, Higher than Hope and the epic Ghost Love Score. The Siren is also a personal favorite. Highly reccomended.

I don't give 5 stars to just any product, but none are more deserving than Once. This could very well be the most brilliant and powerful CD I've heard in ages...perhaps the best since Master Of Puppets...it's really that good.
Being a busy American, I've had absolutely no exposure to the Symphonic, Operatic type metal so popular in Europe. Not only has this album hooked me on Nightwish, but has drawn me into a number of other bands such as Within Temptation, Epica, Krypteria, Therion, Sirenia, and Tristania.

"Nemo" was the first song I heard from Nighwish back in '04. My friend was e-mailing me, and sent me the song. Since then, I bought the album two years later, and still treaure it today. I really don't have favorites, but I agree that this was their breakthrough to American soil. Here are some immortal songs:
Dark Chest of Wonders (Anette's version is amazing!)
Nemo (my conversion song...)
Planet Hell (epic and soundtrack worthy!)
Creek Mary's Blood (very diverse, but touching and stunning!)
The Siren (loved this in Vegas!)
Ghost Love Score (Toumas should compose with a song like this!)
This is the album to convert your friends with, since its more soundtrack like and gripping. I'm glad their touring America a lot more, we need a break from the disasters like Miley Cyrus, Madonna, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. This one needs to be checked out, and one you won't forget! NW forever!
THE Nightwish album June 13, 2008

If you're just getting into Nightwish, this is the album to get; it's got the same full orchestra, pounding metal power, and high production quality as Dark Passion Play, but on Once you have Tarja, and that makes a big difference.
I think new vocalist Annette sounds fine on DPP, but it's just a more generic sound. No doubt some will view it as more "accessible" than Tarja's operatic vibrato, but I think Tarja's voice - Wagnerian, bombastic, over-the-top - was just a better fit for the Nightwish sound and overall concept.
While I concede that the whole idea of symphonic metal is pretty far removed from most of today's pop, Annette's vocals give Nightwish more of a pop sound, and one closer to other female-fronted acts. With Tarja, they were unique.
So that brings us back to Once. I think it's the best Nightwish album ever. Personal favorites for me are "Wish I Had An Angel," "Planet Hell," "Creek Mary's Blood," and "Ghost Love Score." I can do without "Romanticide," but other than that this is one great album.
