Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
A history-making event for both popular and country music, this album brought together the hippieish Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with some of the all-time legends of country and bluegrass music, including Roy Acuff, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, and Mother Maybelle Carter herself. It may not sound earth-shaking now, but in the days before Johnny Cash covered Soundgarden songs, there wasn't too much mixing going on between Nashville and the longhair camp. The result: an epochal meeting of minds exploring the joys of gospel, bluegrass, and old-time country music. Check out traditional acoustic gems like "Wildwood Flower," "Orange Blossom Special," "Soldier's Joy," and of course the heart-wrenching title track. Sixteen years later, Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Volume Two made for a worthy sequel to this seminal cross-cultural experiment. --Mary Park

5 out of 5 stars Sangin' 'bout that old Kentucky blue...   January 7, 2004

I first heard this masterpiece when I was in college. Some friends put on the 3-record set (Remember records?) and sang along with Wabash Cannonball I think it was. After listening to the whole collection, I got the set...and got the CDs for my birthday years later.

I don't think of it as a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band album, maybe unfortunately for them. Indeed, I'm not that much of a bluegrass fan (having had a housemate for a while who over-played the banjo.) But the music of this collection is fabulous. Just to listen to Doc Watson is incredible. (How can a guy pic that fast?) The songs are, I'm told, classics among the bluegrass repertoire.

From tunes Doc Watson's picking of which would make Alvin Lee jealous, to sentimental tunes, especially the title number, a kind of bluegrass requiem, you can't go wrong. I'm just now looking at the names of the 38 tunes on the set. Fantastic.

The performers are talking between the numbers too. Not frivolity but musical detail. They really are professionals despite their lack of credentials.

Oh, and I heard reference to the album--which I am proud to own--on public radio which was discussing the best-selling soundtrack to "O Brother, Where Art Thou," also bluegrass. They felt the soundtrack was reminiscent of this collection (which was assumed to be a distant memory to listeners.)

Anyway, between the classic numbers, and the classic performers, who other reviewers have named, I can't recommend the album strongly enough.

Be prepared, though, to hum tunes that strike a chord with you after you've listened to it. (I got in trouble where I worked as I listened to it, then sat at a computer humming and whistling all day! And I wasn't humming "Taps"!)

...You are my flower....that's bloomin' in the mountain so high....

Oh...sorry.

Get it, and enjoy it.

This is a classic American album. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band worked with several Nashville legends, like Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Roy Acuff, Merle Travis and Jimmy Martin. The veterans proved they could still keep up with the young upstarts. Most of the songs played were classic country songs. The whole thing works wonderfully well, and if you have any interest in Americana, you should get this CD.

I had been a fan of NGDB for a number of years thanks to exposure to the Uncle charlie album. I had always told myself I would buy Circle someday but always put it off. A number of years involved with the Grateful Dead pushed it on the back burner even farther. Finally purchasing it last year I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Vassar Clements did all the fiddling! J Garcia fans recognizing Vassar from the Old & in the Way sessions. On to the album-

I have to say it was no let down when I first heard this set on the stereo. First off it sounds like it was all recorded in one afternoon which is not a comment on sloppiness. Just that it has a real comfy comraderie about it. If you think you might be interested in bluegrass music, beg borrow or steal the second CD and have a listen. Nothing less than a rundown of bluegrass favorites, to wit- 'Lonesome fiddle blues', 'Foggy mountain breakdown', 'Orange blossom special', you get the idea. Personally I enjoy the appearance of Mother MaBelle Carter, a searing rendition of 'I Saw the Light', and a little ditty called 'Dark as a Dungeon'. 'Way Downtown'. There's only about 40 songs on the collection so there's quite a bit to choose from.

Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Vassar Clements, the NGDB. It's truly amazing. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD   February 6, 2002
Nancy M. Dickinson (Wilmington, OH United States)
I ordered this the same time I ordered "Oh, Brother Where Art Thou?" CD. Love it! While I am considered young to be a lover of this genre of music (37), I was raised by two "country folk" and my mother was raised in the Appalchians, people of all ages will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars WOW - the Greats all in one   January 29, 2002
jumpy1 (New York, NY)
This 2-CD set is a comprehensive work of the best tunes of Bluegrass/Country as it evolved into the 1970s, and the crew is representative of the best you can find of all the famous players of the 20th century. Also included are the conversations they had in the studio between tunes -- just ordinary conversation -- makes you feel like you're right there, sitting in on a gathering of the greats. Definitely one to own and play to death -- no matter where you are!
