2 star raters are top 40 raters November 16, 2008 Cathleen M. Rhodes (Scottsdale, AZ USA) I could not disagree more strongly with the two star reviewers. Yes the series says "hits", but what you need to remember is that when this type of music was popular, it was alternative. Keep it in perspective. This is actually one of my all-time favorites of this series, and I own them all. Why? Because I was young artsy kid who dreamed of living overseas, was heavily influenced by new music and international artsits, and I did NOT listen to the radio. My friends and I sought out the like of: XTC, Fischer Z, Echo and the Bunnymen, etc. long before they would have been considered "hits" of any kind. On another note, how can anyone call themselves a fan of New Wave and not note Split Enz, The Vapors & Devo as hits? They are on this volume as well. This CD has a little bit of everything, and God forbid, you should discover something new, like the beauty of "So Long." One of my favorite songs of the day. I have always thought that this series was less for the mainstream listener, and more for the listener who appreciates the hits along with the college radio indies too. If you're looking for only radio hits, look elsewhere.
Excellent 80's tunes October 4, 2003 Garrett (Manteca, CA United States) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The gem on this disc is obviously Ultravox's Vienna. While the others are very, very good and a few crappy tunes I can't even remember getting air time back in the day, the disc is an overall prize.
Cultural Gap? December 17, 2001 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
After reading the first few reviews I thought it might be appropriate to respond. There are a large number of hits on this album, but a lot of them weren't US hits. If you lived in the UK, Europe or Australia - you will know and like a lot of these songs - even americans who got into the new wave scene in the late 70s and early 80s will know songs from clubs that never got radio play. I really enjoyed this album - and if you know a reasonable number of the songs - I am sure you will enjoy it - it's great at parties too!!
HAVE TO AGREE July 7, 2001 Carl Mack (Palm Springs, CA United States) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have to agree with the previous reviewer. When I started looking down the track listing, I realized I bought this for three cuts ("Love Will Tear Us Apart", "Vienna", and "Danger") probobly one of the weaker complations in the series.
A So-So Collection August 18, 2000 C. Brown (Atlanta, GA United States) 5 out of 11 found this review helpful
Any fan of New Wave will likely already have the best of the tracks included on this collection. And what you don't have, you could find at a retail "Cut-Out" bin. Some of the transfer quality is questionable. You could probably obtain a better quality by taping your local radio station's "retro" 80s show. But as I mentioned, you probably already have "I Don't Like Monday's" floating around somewhere! If you see this CD around cheaply, it's worth picking up (to, if nothing else, save you from having to acquire the better songs one by one). There are a couple of cool tunes which take you back, but all in all, the CD is a hit-or-miss collection.
