Amazon.com All hail the riff king! The Black Keys' guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach has the meanest way with a hook since Jimmy Page. He adds to his arsenal on the band's fourth full-length release, on which each track pounds its way into your skull with fuzzy, swampy fury. Less is very definitely more in Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney's world as the stripped-down guitar/drums attack smolders, burns, and then ignites without shifting into heavy-metal overdrive. But even with the occasional ballad such as "You're the One" slowing the momentum, this is an intoxicating blast of raw, thudding blues power. The duo impressively control the dynamics, raising and lowering the tension in a yin-yang struggle of ominous, greasy, heavy blues-rock that never sounds forced. With the exception of a few subtle but effective overdubs, this is the sound Auerbach and Carney heard in the drummer's basement studio where the music was recorded. Like the best rock and roll, the disc exudes a dark, cramped claustrophobia and foreboding sense of danger, just like wandering through a haunted house, unaware of what is behind the next corner. It's the main ingredient in the band's deceptively simple yet potent formula that creates this addictive, compelling, and often intense album. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description Magic Potion, the Black Keys' fourth album, is a spectacularly stripped-down set of sneakily melodic blues-besotted rock concocted in the Akron, Ohio basement studio of drummer Patrick Carney. Guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach is possessed of a compelling, hurt-beyond-his-years voice and an approach to lead guitar that is both wildly expressive and utterly succinct. The self-taught Carney, who anchors these tracks, may force writers to return

Blues Rock At It's Best November 8, 2008 Tyler Goff (Ann Arbor, MI) The Black Keys could take any old blues tune and turn it into something truly magical. Arguably their best album, Magic Potion is 40+ minutes of this raw-sounding blues rock. And boy, they make it fun along the way. The opening cut "Just Got To Be" is riveting and sounds excellent when blasted stuck in traffic. From there, the CD never disappoints along the way. There isn't a single song that could be considered weak. The latter half, some of the more epic songs are "The Flame" and "Goodbye Babylon", which the Keys are known to play back-to-back live. Magic Potion was worth every penny, and it's original sound will never grow old.
The damn Blues but Good September 3, 2008 Mark W. Sweeny Jr. (Syracuse, N.Y. USA) This Is one great band and especially CD! It's not traditional Blues but It's sweet and catchy. Very talented duo.
INCREDIBLY MAGICAL December 29, 2007 Armando Perez (Birmingham, Alabama) The Black Keys must have travelled in a time machine from 1969 to today, having listened to Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker, then heard what the Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds did with it, adding some heavy drums that sound like baseball bats pounding ... I just couldn't believe my ears when I first heard this, then hearing this amazing album, one of the best discoveries I've made lately. While I'm shocked the Keys haven't made it big (not so much considering the crap that does) I'm kinda glad, that way they won't get corrupted by stardom, like so many good ones have. My wife who doesn't like anything newer than Skynyrd was moving to it. That says it all,
Magic they do have! October 30, 2007 David A. Ireland (Planet Earth, This Solar System) These guys know how to rock; they are as loose and as fuzzy as Hendrix was in his early days (without the screeching guitar obviously). If you like classic rock, you'll like these guys. Their other albums are equally as good.
Wow October 29, 2007 Johnny New Eggs (Minnesota) a fantastic blues rock album. lead vocals are solid, good riffs, lots of soul.
