Fabulous Herrmann Fantasy Score! October 6, 2008 Terrence H. Seamon (New Brunswick, New Jersey USA) This new recording of Bernard Herrmann's score to Mysterious Island will "knock you out" if you are a fan, as I am, of this great 1960's fantasy film.
The Island of Music October 5, 2008 "Gatito" Ojeda (Canary Islands, Spain) In the last years a lot of Herrmmann's film score are being realease again. Some of them are original On Dangerous Ground, or Vertigo: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1958 Film), this one is a re-recording. The producers have issued a sound product restoring as far as they could the original score. The CD includes an extensive libretto with a lot of information about the composer, producers etc. You have also to consider that 'Mysterious Island' is probably one of the most interesting Herrmann's work, played with solvency by the Moscow Symphony. Worthy and recommended.
Another masterpiece from filmdom's consummate composer! September 4, 2008 Reginald D. Garrard (Camilla, GA USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
To borrow liberally from Will Rogers, Bernard Herrmann "never met a NOTE that he didn't like." Herrmann's was a film composer's film composer, being responsible for making EVERY film on which he worked something special. "Mysterious Island" is the third of four collaborations between Herrmann and special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen, the others being "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad," "The Three Worlds of Gulliver," and "Jason and the Argonauts." The scores to those three films are magnificent in their own right, but "Mysterious Island" is, arguably, the best. Thrilling and sweeping are best words to describe the composition. Accompanying a storyline about five Civil War escapees and their encounters with fantastic creatures on a deserted Pacific island, Herrmann's music soars. The effects of Harryhausen when matched with Herrmann's powerful melodies elevate the film to a higher level of film art. The music, performed by William Stromberg and The Moscow Symphony Orchestra, lovingly recreates the score in its entirety. The accompanying booklet is highly informative and picture filled, covering each of the 62 tracks extensively. The running time of the disc is 71:27, including a bonus final cut of Herrmann's "Prelude: King of the Khyber Rifles."
Bernard HERRMANN : un compositeur au service du film February 5, 2008 Jean Marc Perriere (Lille, France) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
"Mysterious Island" est une musique descriptive ou l'on reconnait les themes chromatiques chers a Bernard HERRMANN. William STROMBERG est devenu un habitue des compositions de B. HERRMANN. Cet enregistrement est d'une grande qualite sonore... On a l'impression d'avoir le film devant les yeux !... A conseiller aux collectionneurs de la musique de B. HERRMANN.
OUTSTANDING ! December 26, 2007 LP45CDwoman (Virginia Beach, VA United States) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
For the VERY FIRST TIME, the entire score from the classic Ray Harryhausen film MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is presented on CD! There have been versions of this music released through the years, some legitimate, some not quite so, but not like this! William Stromberg, John Morgan and Anna Bonn, who have done such marvelous work reconstructing scores for other labels, have started up their very own. It is called "Tribute Film Classics", and its first two releases are Bernard Herrmann grails: FAHRENHEIT 451 and MYSTERIOUS ISLAND. Stromberg conducts the Moscow Symphony Orchestra with the exact compliment of instruments Hermann used to create his original score, and it is nothing short of magnificent! Now, some purists may say that nothing is as good as the original tapes of the original sessions, but sometimes this is not the case. Take, for example, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, the theme of which Herrmann was forced to take at a much faster pace when the titles were shortened. He corrected this himself with his own recording of the score suite in 1975, restoring the long, striding majesty of the theme. Such is the case with this new recording of the entire score to MYSTERIOUS ISLAND. It is perfect, beautifully recorded and performed, and as close to the actual original tapes as we are ever likely to get. Also included are cues which were shortened or cut entirely from the film, so what we have here is the most complete MYSTERIOUS ISLAND possible. A lot of obvious love and care has gone into this project. The voluminous booklet included tells you everything you want to know about the score and the history thereof. MYSTERIOUS ISLAND was one of my very first introductions to the art of the film score: I was very young, and saw the movie on a Saturday afternoon at my local movie house. The first thing to hit my child's ears was that THEME! THAT THEME! The titles moved colorfully over a roiling, angry sea, and Bernie's music boiled over with power and majesty. WOW!!! Bernie spoiled me forever. THIS is what a film score could do: take a very, very good film and make it absolutely perfect. I devoured Bernie's albums, filmic and orchestral, and regularly disturbed the other kids in the upstairs bedroom by having the record player up too loud. They would find me "conducting" the sound from the speakers in my room. Thank you, Mr. Herrmann. You opened my ears to greatness. Kudos to all concerned with this essential movie score CD. Every Herrmann fan bows at your collective feet. Thank you! And long life and much success to Tribute Film Classics!
