Papa Roach is a breed apart in the nearly overfull rap-rock arena. The Northern California-bred quartet lacks the bluster of Limp Bizkit and the political agenda of Rage Against the Machine, instead serving up an ultra-intense, highly personal brand of funk-punk-rock-rap on their stunning major-label debut. Closer in spirit to Faith No More than Korn, Papa Roach's signature sound is defined by Coby Dick's raspy, forceful vocals. Dick's pointed lyrics astutely address everything from divorce ("Broken Home") and attention deficit disorder ("Thrown Away") to alcoholism ("Binge"). Jerry Horton's memorable, melodic, and insinuating guitar lines and the band's aggro, moshable rhythms provide added weight. Papa Roach's intensity is never forced; the songs here are varied, discrete, tuneful, and cohesive. Indeed, the mellow, reggae- like "Tightrope" is as compelling as the commanding "Last Resort," making Infest one of the most arresting heavy-music debuts of 2000. -- Katherine Turman

To some, Papa Roach represented all that's wrong with nu-metal. They released their major label debut, "Infest," in 2000, so they were somewhat of a Johnny-come-lately to the nu-metal genre. They were labeled both a "baby Bizkit" and a "Rage Against The Machine rip-off," due to their sound's similarity to those bands. But Papa Roach weren't as great as RATM because Papa Roach lack the musical direction/political motivation, and guitarist Jerry Horton can't exactly wail like Tom Morello (the riffs on "Incest" are quite simple). Plus PR frontman Coby Dick seems very uneasy with the vocal style he uses here: rapping. And finally, to make matters worse, these songs lyrics are also rather cliche. All of the usual lyrical themes are covered here, ranging from suicide ("Last Resort") to bad childhoods ("Broken Home") to greed ("Between Angels And Insects") to bad relationships ("Revenge") to addiction ("Binge").

But not all hope is lost, because Coby and the gang clearly know how to write a catchy tune or two. Songs like the pounding title track, the crunchy "Snakes," and "Never Enough" boast big, memorable, fist pumping choruses. Plus, songs like the somewhat creepy and dark hit single, "Last Resort," the speedy, headbanging fourth track, "Dead Cell," and the lurching, headbobbing "Thrown Away," all feature several strong, almost irresistable hooks. Don't be surprised if a few of these songs get stuck in your head all day. And when Papa Roach dabble in melody, they do so effectively. Tracks three, five, ten, and the Sublime-esque, reggae-lite album closer are all very memorable and show that Coby actually has a decent singing voice (which he would use more on later albums).

So, "Infest" isn't at all unique, but it is an OK album, and a fairly good and arresting major label debut for Papa Roach. It's a little generic and cheesy, yes, but it is still better than quite a bit of the nu-metal fare on the market, including Limp Bizkit's "The Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water." If you unabashedly love nu-metal and/or have a dire need for Y2K nostalgia, "Infest" is worth checking out.

2 out of 5 stars Glad they "ditched" the whole rap/NuMetal Thing   October 27, 2007

When Papa Roach first hit the scene, I was standing in a bar, and one of their songs came on the radio. I asked my friend, what is this crap that they are playing, he replied, "Papa Roach" Ughh, I thought stinking NuMetal Rap/Rock whatever you wanna call it band. Then in 2002 I saw the video (dont ask me why I was watchin MTV) for "She loves me Not" and I was suprised that it was Papa Roach. I liked the song so much I picked up "lovehatetragedy" and even though not perfect, it was a nice for them to shift over to a more straight up rock vibe. As I got into them more, I decided to pick this up. It's still pretty bad, even though I like the band now, there are two or three good songs here, the most is just throw away garbage. The band has made much progress since this album. If you prefer them as a rock/rap act, this album is for you. If you like them just as a rock band, then you will probely think this is pretty mediocre like I did.

5 out of 5 stars All you narrow minded musical elitists just shut up already!   February 18, 2007

I am sick and tired of all this bashing of Nu-Metal! What is so bad about it? And who are you to say that its dead? I listened to this band since I was 12 years old (I am 19 now) and I never got sick of it (this alblum anyways that new stuff is junk)! If you were assumeing I am some teenager who doesnt know real music you are wrong! I like all kinds of metal! If you are going to call me a poser metal head you are wrong! I have respefct for all kinds of metal! I like stuff like Soilwork, Trivium, Dio, Nevermore, Dragonforce, and etc. etc. I like everything from classic metal, power, death, black, nu metal and beyond!

I am just sick of all this bashing of nu-metal. You have no right to judge all nu-metal fans as idiot narrow-minded teenagers! Seriously Its just like me judgeing all you narrow minded classic rockers as 35 year losers who live in their mother's basement! Because that is probably what most of you are! If you were a "true metalhead" as you call yourself surely you would have respect for all kinds of metal! If you are saying nu-metal is talentless you must be a retard! Every genre of music is talented in its own right (except for teen pop and rap.)

Seriously why bash papa roach if the Backstreet Boys just came out with a new CD? I am sure even you would rather listen to Papa Roach than listen to them. I know I would. Like I said I am tired of hearing "Nu-Metal is dead!" So Hair Metal or Glam Metal is not dead? Yeah right!. You are saying nu-metal is dead but I dont reckon the genres I just listed stayed for long now did they? Dont get me wrong I like that kind of stuff too.

As time goes by things change! Get used to it! People who were raised around different things like different stuff! I was raised around nu-metal so what do you expect? Although I do like everything else. Seriously I hear alot of people saying extremely cruel and uncalled for things about nu-metal fans and saying things like "I hope all you nu-metal fans get AIDS" or "I wont 2 kill mislef wen I heer dis!!" I think it is wrong to hate people just because they like a different genre of music than you do! So wish such a terrible thing just because I like a different kind of music than you do? You are sick! And if you are going to kill yourself just over music then you must be a retard.

So what if Papa Roach sound like every other rap metal band. Hey most hair metal bands sound exactly the same as eachother so there. Sorry about my rambleing. Now about Papa Roach. Yeah I know they sound like every other nu-metal band but hey who cares! I dont even know what I just said...
