Amazon.com Taped in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the final night of Rush's 2002 Vapor Trails tour, this double-disc set finds Canada's famous power trio giving its all for 40,000 of the most rabid Rush fans ever gathered under one sky. Sure, the guys are all pushing 50. Bassist-vocalist Geddy Lee strains to hit some high notes, and guitar wizard Alex Lifeson occasionally sounds a tad bored. But by and large they remain at or near the peak of their powerful game--and, from the looks of it, they're having more fun than ever. Drawing from 15 of their 17 studio albums and leaning heavily on Vapor Trails, they celebrate their stylistic range (progressive-leaning classic rock to dense but melodic post-grunge) and the far broader scope of drummer Neil Peart's considered lyrics. The concert alone pushes three hours, and disc 2 offers a lengthy documentary and multi-angle options for three songs. The Dolby Digital 5.1 or 2.0 sound quality is generally good, if overly compressed. Peart's drums sound fabulous, in fact: splashy and tight and far more natural than they've sounded on any Rush album, live or otherwise, in years. Not to be missed--and needlessly hard to find--is a 1975 promotional clip for Fly by Night's "Anthem." This set is a must, even for the doubtful. --Michael Mikesell

Overrated August 16, 2008 C. Trahan I am not sure where folks are coming from when they deem this a great video concert. I have seen Rush in concert 5 times and this does not measure up. Not only does it not measure up but there are several DVD's released by Rush that are better than this one such as R30 or Exit Stage Left. The audio quality on this DVD is not very good for a concert released in this day and age. On top of that, I find that the set list leaves alot to be desired although admitedley, I am a fan of the earlier rush days pre-dating Grace Under Pressure. Surely, many will disagree with me but for me, I don't find that this was even worth my money. I do recommed R30 or Exit Stage Left though. None of the DVD's released by Rush exceed the performances that I saw from the band in the late 1970's though. Rock On, DJ Craig
BEST LIVE DVD EVER...NO JOKE!!!! August 3, 2008 David Falzano (Boston, MA USA) I can't understand for the life of me why there are ANY negative reviews for this DVD! It's RUSH, playing at their best, the production sounds top notch, the crowd is full of energy, excellent setlist, & of course the stage design & show is magnificent! Also, the second disc is a cool documentary which lets the fans get to see what Rush is like up close & personal as well as listening to them talking about the band's long history with touring & how they choose what songs to play & such. Let me just dismiss the negative responses I was talking about for those who might not have seen them below. First off, "the crowd noise is too much"....OK the crowd is loud & very energetic, but NOT SO LOUD that they drown out any of the music. I could hear EVERY NOTE PLAYED & EVERY LYRIC SUNG! If anything, the crowd was just loud enough so that it ADDS to the experience of watching this DVD! After all, if you are watching a band play live, don't you want to experience like it truly is live? I would think so. Second, "sound problems early on"...what the?! I literally heard ONE sound glitch which lasted a split second. That was it! So I don't understand pluralizing "problem." Trust me Rush fans, this DVD set is worth your hard earned money...don't pass it up by ANY means! I can truly attest to everything I've said because I saw Rush recently on tour & their show was very similar to this one on 'Rush in Rio.' BUY IT!
Amazing, people say the sound sucks, they are wrong July 28, 2008 R. Boden When I first watched this DVD I was amazed to see the love even South America had for Rush. I don't know what people are talking about with the sound quality being poor...the sound was perfectly fine for me. As for the crowd over the music...there is not one point where you can hear the crowd over the music, yes it's loud, but it doesn't bury the music. It is just really awesome to see a country like Brazil sing along with Rush when english isn't the primary language down there. This DVD is a must have for any Rush fan.
An absolute must! July 20, 2008 Douglas Flummer (C'dale, Illinois) If you are buying a concert video, you want to get the entire concert experience, and that includes the interaction between performer and audience. If you don't care for that sort of interaction, you might as well stick to the standard album. The Brazilian fans make this a unique concert experience, singing along to several songs and creating a huge energy factor that you can feel in the band's performance. The performance is huge as well, extended and including a few songs that they have not been playing as much of in recent years (By-Tor, La Villa Strangiato, chiefly). I have multiple Rush concert videos, and this is an excellent addition to my library.
Fantastic energy May 30, 2008 K. Parsons (Idyllwild, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
D. White says Alex "should be shot" for his sound quality due to the crowd noise...??? Huh? Well, apart from the sacrilege and the sheer stupidity of said drivel, this is a CONCERT CD!!! And therein lies my point - a concert is nothing without what...? The CROWD!!! That is what sets "Rio" apart from every other live CD Rush has done. Sure, "Exit" has a great mix with enthusiastic crowd response, but the crowd is pretty muted and pushed to the background in the mix. The best example of crowd interplay during a song on "Exit" is about 1 second during the bass solo in "Freewill". So, "Rio" is a total blast due to stuff like the sing-along on YYZ. Come on now - who'd ever think that would happen? Has a crowd ever spontaneously sang along with an instrumental on any other live Rush cd? Or any other band's live cd? (I'm sure it has happened but I can't think of any). If one is looking for impeccable, crisp sound... buy Rush's studio cds, especially T4E and PW. However, when I want to listen to a live cd, or watch a live dvd (as in this case), I want good sound but a great crowd. It doesn't get any better than this...
