Amazon.com Inevitably described as leggy or toothy, Carly Simon emerged in the early '70s as a kind of finishing-school sex symbol. She's the daughter of publisher Richard Simon, as in Simon and Schuster, and her very personal early songs were informed with a familiarity and uneasiness with the trappings of wealth and prominence. The finely detailed "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" best captures the young Simon. At a time when her counterculture peers were singing about buildings going up in flames, 26-year-old Carly focused on the glow from her brooding father's cigarette as she slipped by his study. "That's the Way" was the first of a string of top-10 hits Simon produced through the '70s and into the '80s. Anthology includes the lot of them--from "Anticipation" through "You're So Vain" past "Let the River Run" (better known as the theme from Working Girl). Far surpassing the 10-song Elektra retrospective, The Best of Carly Simon, this two-disc, 40-song collection spans three decades in the career of an artist who clearly believes that confession is good for the soul. --Steven Stolder

You can NEVER get too much of a good thing..... June 26, 2007 Robert C. Hufford (Hopewell, VA USA) ...and Carly is the VERY best. By now, you know all the "big hits"....Well, this album has them all, plus some you probably don't know. This wonderful collection will give the new fan a much fuller appreciation of what it is that makes Carly so special than will any of her other "greatest hits" albums. Of course, "Anticipation" and "You're So Vain" are essential to any Carly retrospective, but there's a whole lot more, and not all are well known. But those songs are part of the story, too. Carly Simon is what we call a "confessional" singer--heart on sleeve, emotions laid bare. The girl has been bringing us joy for 35 years, but she's had some pain of her own, even if she didn't have time for it. Her fans have laughed, and cried, with her, prayed for her, and, thru her music, felt her pain. That's just the way we, and she, have always heard it should be. Some singers seem to dwell on Mt. Olympus; them, we can respect. But Carly, in all her trials and tribulations, we can love. This is a superb collection; if you want to see the different aspects of our generation's favorite girl--folk, rock, jazz standards--grab it and prepare to see just WHY we love Carly. By the way, the cover photo is gorgeous, too.

Great Anthology but Not So Great Sound Quality! March 13, 2006 Frederick Baptist (Singapore) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been a Carly Simon fan ever since I heard "The Right Thing to Do" which is still one of my all-time favourite tracks; a thing of beauty and although one of her shortest ever compositions is a masterpiece of great songwriting. And then I realised that I really like Carly's earlier works more than the others but this album is very aptly entitled "Anthology" as that's what is really is: a history of the growth of a singer-songwriter. As a result, this is not a best of compilation and to be fair, it doesn't claim to be. This is why we have a mish-mash of the very good and the not so good on these two discs but you get the whole story as it were of the career of this great singer-songwriter. Rhino has become synonymous with great quality remastering of classic albums however this release is not one of their better at bats. The volume levels are very low and although they slightly improve towards the last ten tracks on disc two, the overall quality of the remastered sound is average at best. Still, if you are looking for an album that best tells the history of Carly, then this is the one to get. You get the whole story, warts and all.
Great Carly Simon! January 25, 2006 ARMANDO R. VENEGAS (Lima, Peru) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ms. Carly Simon is, among other great American female singers/songwriters, one of their best! A nice bunch of songs in this compilation, she really shows how extraordinary her beautiful voice is. Although being a good one, this 2-CD package doesn't include the whole of Carly's production, but anyway it makes a good presentation for those who are not already aware (anyone there?) of the great singer and composer Carly Simon is.
Just The Usual Self Absorbed Egocentric Songs From An Ex Percodan Addict! December 14, 2005 John Baranyai 2 out of 11 found this review helpful
It seems like Ms. Simon has forged a succesful music career by singing about two Themes namely- (1)Good Loving Gone Bad and (2) How great she thinks she is in bed. These two Themes have been repeated ad infinitum and ad nauseum for the last 30 years which gets kind of tiresome after a while. Maybe I should ring up Warren Beatty and ask for a Second Opinion? Just a thought. I give this album 5 stars becuase no doubt every one of her fans who are just as egocentric and self absorbed as her will buy this compilation.
