JUST LIKE I REMEMBERED! February 12, 2007 E. McCluskey I'd looked for this recording in "bricks and mortar" music stores, to no avail. I'm thrilled to have NRBQ back in my life. This is a wonderful collection, and there are new pieces that were not on the original tape I'd had years ago.
FREE ENDORPHINS!! October 23, 2005 K. Ayres (Kentuckiana) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
There is absolutely NO WAY to listen to NRBQ and not feel absolutely GREAT from head to toe! I dare you to try listening without at least tapping your toes. I can't listen without dancing, singing and smiling! Like I said, "free endorphins!" A small investment that pays you back forever!
Well, heck yeah! September 27, 2005 M. Bromberg (Atlanta, GA United States) I'm glad to see the good folks at Rounder have rereleased this little dynamo, with some extra scraps for those of us who have waited so long. Fun and even goofy at times, this is what used to be called good-time rock'n'roll -- "Howard Johnson," "Who Put the Garlic in the Glue?" -- but there's also music aimed for your head as well as your heels ("Only You" and "Boys in the City") and some swing left over for a freewheeling version of "Ac-cent-u-ate the Positive." Everyone's having a blast here, and the disc is remastered so well you can almost hear the pop-a-top sounds around Terry's clavinet. There's a fond appreciation of the session in the liner notes (we should all be thankful to whoever got Doug and Link Wray to the studio in a cold upstate New York winter to put down backing vocals). If you dig the Q, this is a motherlode of back-to-back hits. If you wonder what makes these guys the biggest cult band in the land, this is a great place to start. Either way, NRBQ is gonna get you. Resistance is futile.
No Scrap Here September 5, 2005 Huey P. Long (Austin, TX) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I picked up "Scraps" at my local library. I'd read mentions of NRBQ in several publications over the years, and always thought I should check them out. On first listen, I was underwhelmed. Repeated listenings snowballed into what has become an addiction for me. Not since The Beatles' Revolver have I been so blown away by the inventiveness, musicianship, and songwriting on a record. And the sheer good feeling of it all. Track 12, the Mercer-Arlen classic "Accentuate the Positive", sums up the entire record for me. NRBQ are obviously people who wring as much joy out of life as they can, laughing at it and themselves at the same time. The album builds, "like the Supremes", as Zappa once said, from the punchy opener "Howard Johnson" to what to me is the best song, the Beatlesque "It's Not So Hard". The ballads are classic - "Only You" is a gem, complete with a toy piano solo. There is no filler here. Imagine the best of The Band, the Grateful Dead, the Fab 4, Harry Nilsson, and Hoagy Carmichael rolled into one and you'll get an idea of what these guys were about when they made this record. Five emphatic stars.
One additional note - for those who miss Lowell.... May 1, 2005 ~J-Hi ('Down East') 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Discovered 'The Q' quite by accident, tryin' to chase down a kicky li'l tune from a car commercial (hence, Ridin' In My Car!)...and must say I'm quite pleased that the Fates dealt me that hand. Br'r Finkel's review above says good a'plenty, & I couldn't hope to improve on that....but find one odd shortcoming - not so much with his review but, in the overall content here about NRBQ. Haven't read it all, so of course it might be there & I've just missed it, but I see no comparison to Little Feat! For those who miss the soulful creations of Lowell George & crew, give these boys a try -- they's about the closest thing to come down the pike since the true Dixie Chickens crossed the road to the shark tank. RIP Lowell....we love & miss ya! *ribit* Shut...UP! ~8) ~J-Hi
