Not unlike Joni Mitchell's recent work, The Bedroom Tapes finds Carly Simon facing the modern world with a certain bemusement. She's not as cranky as Mitchell about the things she sees; in fact, she doesn't quite seem to know what to think about such phenomena as the Internet ("Big Dumb Guy"). There's some wit on display here; "We Your Dearest Friends" is a cutting song about social politics, while "Actress" may be a sly acknowledgment of Simon's famous stage fright. Despite her obvious smarts, though, Bedroom has the distinct feel of the work of someone who's going through the motions. Grown-up rock doesn't have to be so staid. --Bob Roget

I was lucky enough to get a brand-new sealed copy of this album off ebay for $7 bucks. I'm a avid Carly fan, and this is one of her best. Some songs are corny, like Actress and I'm Really The Kind. But So Many Stars, I Forget, We Your Dearest Friends, Whatever Became of Her, Our Affair, In Honor of You (George) are prime examples of her distinguished songwriting talent. I highly recommend this album for those songs alone, and the artwork is great! I love when the record company takes the time to give us a good booklet, with lyrics and lots of photos. Great this album, the prices start low.

I know that is what you wonder, right? Of course. Anyone who is reading these customer reviews while considering to buy or wondering who else felt the need to validate (or dispute) public opinions on "The Bedroom Tapes" should be curious. Here is why: This is a one-man complete (or rather, one-woman) from draft to final submission composition of hers. She covers subjects such as love relationship discord, feeling depressed enough to acknowledge it, breast cancer surgery, marital regrets, opportunistic psuedo-friends, and some people are not in the mood to listen to the lyrics even if they are scored in very, very, educated and experienced music scores. That's fine. Everyone is an individual. No one has to be convinced of anything here, since music is a personal art form for the observer. The artist is separate, how and why they create it is one thing. After that, it's all up to you. Personally, I was in the mood for hearing another opinion on the misery of being miserable and not trying to pretend and who else knows their friends use and gossip about them and think they're getting away with it but that's me. The bottom line to this CD is the fact that it has no large "thumbs up" by popularity, sales, reviews BUT also is completely embraced by large populations of adult-rock classic-singer/songwriter groups due to the truth and mature issues she chose to sing, perform with beautiful music in a dignified way. That ain't easy when you're having serious issues for most musicians I know. But Carly Simon isn't in need of fans or industry-sales. She wanted to create this because she needed to and I guess other people are also highly pleased with it because they give positive reviews far more than necessary and the fact she won the Boston Music Award for "Our Affair" is proof. Boston isn't Los Angeles where I was born and raised--we let Arnold Swartzennegar (nobody can spell it) into our Governor's Mansion if that's a major clue. I like it, play it, hum it and if someone else can't snap or tap to it, that's fine too.

This is a fairly recent album, but here is all the evidence we need that Carly has never lost the magic touch. In the midst of more personal problems, Carly went back to her rock days, and gave us a real treat...
Once more, Carly lays her troubles out for all to see...in this case, breast cancer. Some folks don't care for Carly sharing her pain, but if "Scar", and Carly's example, get one lady in for her mammogram....
No BIG HITS, but great voice singing great music....You'll still want Carly's early gold standards, but you'll want this, too...Promise.

Listening to Carly Simon's THE BEDROOM TAPES is such a rare and personal glimpse into this somewhat-reclusive artist's heart and soul that one is almost tempted to think they've found her long-lost diary. Little wonder, since most of the songs on this CD were written while the artist was recovering from cancer surgery. And, Ms. Simon does not shy away from speaking about her personal health ordeal, often in brutally frank terms. In the touching song "Scar" she writes "A man I knew once said he wanted to see me/ I said I'd been sick but was on the mend/ I told him a few of the overall details/He said that's too bad and he never called me again." However, the sadness of that verse is immediately overcome by the upbeat and defiant refrain of "Scar" in which she sings "A big man will love you even more when you're hurting/and a really big man loves a really good scar". Her illness and recovery are also the subject of the touching "I Forget", while she lashes out at friends who have abandoned her in the biting song "We Your Dearest Friends". This is not to say that THE BEDROOM TAPES is a depressing work- far from it, in fact. In the lighthearted song "Actress", she pokes fun at Hollywood film stars, while the magnificent "So Many Stars" fills the air with some of the most beautiful and haunting melodies we've seen from Ms. Simon in years. Her voice is as rich as ever, perhaps even stronger with age and experience, and she receives wonderful back-up support from such talents as Liam O'Manlai, The Rankin Sisters, Ben Taylor and Jill Dell'Abate. THE BEDROOM TAPES may not offer up any top 40 hits, but it does give us something much more important....the seminal work of one of America's great ladies of music.
