I learned a lot from Lane November 18, 2005 Jazzcat (Genoa, Italy Italy) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I actually learned a lot from Shawn. Of course I don't think there's not a single guitar player who could play with Shawn precision, speed and dexterity, neither me for sure, anyway I learned some licks, but more than anything else, some concepts. I think this is the way you have to take these instructional videos from great musicians. You have to get some new concepts not only licks and tricks. It's fun if you can learn some lines from them but you can easily forget them, instead if you learn concepts from the greats you will have something that will remain with you for your entire musical journey. You get these new concepts and you can use them to colour your OWN phrasing, your OWN lines because music in the end is the expression of our own inner nature, I don't see the point in replicate Shawn's music even if I really really love it. For instance. I have these two videos from Shawn and I get from them the idea of playing different rhythmic groupings of notes that I wasn't able to play before I watched these videos. I mean that Shawn teach you to play lines and sequences in rhytmic groupings of 4, 5, in 6,7,9,11,13 .. After I had practised a lot with this concept I gained a completly new way of seeing my phrasing. Now I play a lot more syncopated and with a lot more angles in my lines. I think now I sound a lot more advanced. I use this concept more thean anywhere else in another context by the way in jazz guitar playing. So the deal should be, you get some ideas, you apply them to your playing and maybe you use them in another context. So the thing become your's! Talking about Shawn Lane and what he plays in these two videos, he was unreachable. He had an unbelievable speed and precision on the fretboard and his lines were exquisite! Seeing him playing and teaching in front of the studio cameras and performing live at the GIT is an experience! Shawn Lane was truly the best! UNBELIEVABLE!
Lane: the finest technical guitarist who has ever lived! April 10, 2004 W. C Donovan (Boston, MA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
And I truly believe that, having heard anybody and everybody notable who has picked up the instrument. This video is not for beginners. It's not even for advanced players. It's for players with an inhuman skill level...like Shawn Lane. If you're curious to watch the most devastating speed and precision ever to grace a fretboard, you must get this video. Pentatonic scales, legatos, sweep-picking...Shawn Lane was a master of every facet related to the guitar. This video is a keepsake and tribute to this late master, an incredibly virtuous musician with Herculean talent. Holdsworth, McLaughlin, Breau, DiMeola, Petrucci, Angelo...all great players, all virtuosos, but not quite at Lane's level. Amazing.
more of a demo than instruction December 21, 2002 Howard L Lambert (Lemoore, California United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This guy is absolutely, amazingly talented. He demonstrates how flawlessly fast he is and how much theory he knows, but I haven't actually learned anything very usefull from this vid, yet. The booklet is not transcibed by him and whoever did got most of it totally wrong (many times, Shawn's fingers are in a totally different area of the fretboard), rendering it basically useless.
A must buy of Shawn Lane's demo October 21, 1999 A very good video from Shawn Lane, excellent demostration on his speed. And you will be enlightened. The tab booklet is good but better if thicker. Get one if you lover "Power of ten"!
If you want to build your chops, check this out! August 9, 1999 Great examples of mixing slurs with accented notes, things I never would have thought of. Easy to understand explanations and descriptions of his unbelievable technique. The only drawback is there is no chord section to the video, and a few great licks slip by without transcription.
