| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Picking up where Adam Sandler left off, Adam Gardner, Dave Schneider (The LeeVees) and friends turn in an entire batch of Hanukah novelty tunes that are simultaneously hummable, at times funny and clever and played with a kind of informed garage rock spirit and oddball sensibility that will appeal to fans of They Might Be Giants and NRBQ. They sing as much about the cultural underpinnings of the season as they do about the meaning of the menorah, musing about how the hell you spell "Channnnukah" (sic), "Kugel," and "Applesauce vs. Sour Cream" (on those delicious potato cakes). Clearly--like everyone else, Jew or Gentile--they live to eat at this festive time. The fun keeps rolling as they get Adam's mom involved on the tune about the timeshare in Florida, and rhyme Madonna with Kabala, pondering how the former got into the latter, then take us to the Matzah Ball in "Jewish Girls," a Jewish singles party with "girls all shapes and sizes." Oy, and yes it does, it rocks too! -- Martin Keller

This album is Chot! December 23, 2008 Leora Duncan (San Francisco) I would say these guys sound like the Jewish version of They Might Be Giants, but I think those guys are Jewish too. Maybe they're like the Jewish Barenaked Ladies. But, wait, aren't they Jewish too? Anyway, the Leevees are a great band in their own right. Their lyrics are clever and funny, but probably only to Jewish people because when I played it for my non-Jewish friends they didn't know what kugel was so how could they laugh at a song about kugel? They did love the song about spelling Hanukkah though, because that is a problem that has befuddled Jews and non-Jews alike for centuries. Anyway, I too am so relieved to find a hip, cool band that sings about Jewish stuff in a way that isn't sad or klezmery or cantor-like. I hope they write a song some day about haroset. Which can also be spelled charoset.
they rock. December 12, 2008 lauren g i have three young kids and wanted some fun hannukah music that in some way approaches all of the christmas songs we are bombarded with. my girls LOVE this cd, particulary the first song. at ages 2 and 3 they memorized it. the songs are witty, insightful, and catchy. i hope they will continue to make hannukah rock. or is it channukah? or hanukah? how do you spell it? :)
My family's favorite Hanukkah album November 11, 2007 Inconstant Reader (Brookfield, WI United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a gem! The songs are funny and catchy, and they do a great job reflecting modern Jewish life in America. It's only November, and already I find myself singing "Goyim Friends" (my favorite track) and "Latke Klan." Both the kids and adults in my family love it, and we play it over and over. It's my favorite Hanukkah gift (except for families with young children -- I give them the fabulous Golden Dreydl: Klezmer Nutcracker for Chanukah). There are plenty of good klezmer Hanukkah albums, and some that are jazzy or swing, but this is the only one that truly rocks.
Listen to this year round...it's great for road trips! May 23, 2007 Shelby K. Irons 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am constantly amazed how enjoyable this entire CD is from beginning to end. I was first introduced to The Leevees in December '05 at a Barenaked Ladies concert. The Leevees opened the show and they were awesome and funny! I am not Jewish but I was smitten with the music from the moment I heard it. I definately recommend this CD, especially for road trips! I wish a few of the songs they performed Live were included on this CD but maybe there will be another one down the road!
LOVE IT!! March 16, 2007 A. Hicks 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
