WHY??? December 5, 2008 Micky (Florida) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
"Remember why (it`s christmas)" and still try to make a fast $$$ that is the sad part!!! I understand that this GREAT album is out of print and that is sad enough but then I look around and all I see is that people still all in for their own PROFIT even on CHRISTMAS!! Well it's the season for the giving, so I am willing to share my copy with everyone for FREE aka "MY GIFT FOR YOU" so get in contact with me :-) so every HOUSEHOLD can enjoy this classic!!!
Unexpected gem November 23, 2008 SPECTRA (California) I know this is not the most ideal way to introduce the review for this Album, but the info is very relevant as it points to a song which in turn points to Alaxander Oneals well done 'My Gift to You'. I am, as many are, a big fan (fanatic if you will) of the 'Martin' television series. On the MARTIN second season disc 3 dvd there is an episode called 'Holiday Blues'. It is at the end credits of this episode, where a cut of a song is played, that I was introduced to a splendid contemporary Christmas song. The name of the song is 'This Christmas'. It is (I didn't know at the time) the Donny Hathaway version. Searching the internet for the song called 'This Christmas'. I found that there are a number of artist that have performed the song. There are however only 2 versions (in my opinion) that are standouts. One by Donny Hathaway and one by Alexander Oneal. In fact they are BOTH exceptional. It is hard to put into exacting words just how good Alexander O'neals slightly up tempo version of 'This Christmas' is other than to say that it is exceptional. ( abrev - yes, It's all that! ) I had heard of Alexander Oneal but had not listened to anything he put out. But now having purchased the digitally remastered CD 'My Gift To You' and listening to the whole thing I wholeheartedly agree with all the reviewers that find it to be a music treasure. This Album has such personality to it. If you love soul music this album, the songs, the content speaks to that certain something inside, about our Christmas, our experience, and our connection. The Cd 'My Gift To You' is indeed (in my view) a great contribution, by way of music at Christmas time, and very much worth the cost of the purchase -and some. One last note is the availability of the digitally remastered cd is unknown. I think it's been out some time and I'm not sure if distribution has stopped. I could not get it or order it through any local stores. Found it avail online only and by only a few sellers. I consider myself fortunate to have found this cd NEW before or if it goes away for good.
Classic and contemporary Christmas joy from a formidable voice November 5, 2008 Glen Zimmerman (West Bumblefuch, USA) Already well-regarded as perhaps the most talented singer to be fronted by Jimmy Jam Harris & Terry Lewis, the two of them and O'Neal created this Christmas album in 1988 that is definitely not your standard holiday album. Features several original songs including "Our First Christmas" and "Remember Why (It's Christmas)" that bear the distinctive and enjoyable flavor regularly associated with most music produced by the famous Jam & Lewis production team. There's also an outstanding cover of Donny Hathaway's classic "This Christmas" and whoever thought that anybody could make such a funky good time out of "The Little Drummer Boy?" If you're looking to differentiate your Christmas celebration from the standard status quo, having this album playing is one good way to do it.
Does it get any better than this October 27, 2008 J. RUTLAND (London,Hackney) In a word no, my wife and I think this is the great Christmas album ever. it has 10 fantastic Soulful Christmas choons, it was brilliant when i purchased it on vinyl back when it came out, and we have had the CD for a few years now and it gets played to death at christmas time, and will be dusted of again this year.. 10 out of 10....
Smooth as snow covered landscape! September 14, 2008 T. C. Thomas (Riverside, CA) Alexander O'Neal has one of the greatest voices in the recording industry. Should've had more success, and do not know why he hasn't?? If you want music that is "comfort food" for the holidays, this is it! His voice is deep and resonance as "peaceful waters." Sit back, fire in fireplace, treelights on and enjoy. Or music to cook or wrap presents by. I bet you will stop every now and then and smile or just remember holidays of old! Truly a gift!
