Amazon.com Jewel has concocted an intriguing and at times beautifully inspired holiday album, playing it straight with a big orchestra and backing voices for the first half of the record with standards such as "Joy to the World," "Winter Wonderland," "Silent Night," as well as a lovely rendition of "Ave Maria." Things finally get sparkling in the last half where Jewel does a low-key, kid version of "Rudolph" and sings her own compositions. Her moving "Face of Love" and "Hands" are certain to become holiday standards, capable of being sung in a country, pop, gospel, or R&B vein and deserving of an audience as wide as the nation itself. The record's centerpiece, however, seems to be a six-minute-plus medley that mixes "Go Tell It on the Mountain" with the recent hit "From a Distance" and her own "Life Uncommon." Nonetheless, her stunning adaptation of "Gloria" inspired, in part, by Bach's B-Minor Mass, two tracks later is as powerful and lovely a Christmas vocal performance as you will find anywhere. Produced by the legendary Arif Mardin, Joy is destined to become a holiday classic. --Martin Keller

excellent December 23, 2008 abc snoopy (New Jersey) I really love this music. I only wish it could have been longer. It is nice to hear when you want to go to sleep. It's hard to get but some stores still carry it. I'm glad I got it.
Awesome! December 16, 2008 Zenmaster (Boston, MA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a kick-a$$ album. She brings together several different genres into a cohesive whole while maintaining a traditional Christmas sound. The CD is also full of serious spiritual messages, and is very useful in that way. Has the best version of "O Holy Night" ever -- or at least the best female version. It requires strong voice, and she delivers. "Ave Maria" is also amazing. The CD contains plenty or original music also and she harmonizes well with Nedra Carroll and with herself. What a great voice for Christmas songs. One of the best versions of "Hark the Herald Angels" around. Gets better with every listen.
JEWEL "JOY: A HOLIDAY COLLECTION" December 15, 2008 Pete Doherty (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Jewel's Christmas album "Joy: A Holiday Collection" definitely gets 5 stars from me, aswell as covering some well known traditional Christmas songs, she has chose to cover some lesser known ones too, it's good to see "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" and "I Wonder As I Wander" being covered, I think one of the highlights of the album is her version of "Ave Maria" in which Jewel sings in an operatic way, which I wasn't aware she was able to do until hearing this album. She does the best versions of "Winter Wonderland" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" I've ever heard, "Face Of Love" was written by Jewel and features vocals from her Mum, her Mum is also on "I Wonder As I Wander" too. "Gloria" shows Jewel singing in an operatic way aswell as "Ave Maria" and she does a fun version of "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" (also with her Mum) - I like her versions of "Silent Night" and "Joy To The World" and it was good to see a Christmas version of "Hands" (an original Jewel song taken from her 2nd studio album "Spirit" - I can't say I dislike this album in any way, although it is more of a traditional type of Christmas album, it's very mellow, but anyone who is a fan of Jewel will enjoy it.
Excellent traditional christmas album December 13, 2008 Gregory L. Smith 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my favorite Christmas album. So many artists believe they have to "Jazz Up" their Christmas music, but it usually just gets in the way of enjoying a classic song. Instead, Jewel sings these holiday favorites in a traditional manner and does a beautiful job. O Holy Night is my favorite Christmas song, and I have never heard it done better. The one exception on this album is an odd version of Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, but I just skip it.
Fantastic Christmas CD! November 26, 2008 Mary M. Kleinsmith (Buffalo, NY USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a certified Christmas-music junkie, so I only allow myself to purchase two new CD's each year. So, naturally, I'm very selective. This CD turned out to be everything I could have hoped and more. A nice mixture of traditional carols, religious and secular, and all delivered in the melodious tones Jewel delivers. Love it!
