Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Fruvous album   December 26, 2007
K. Atterberry (Illinois, USA)
As other reviewers have said, this album is more serious than the other Fruvous albums. What I've found is "Thornhill" is the only Fruvous album that I can leave on repeat play in the car and not get tired of. The sillier stuff is fun for a while, but Thornhill is just plain good music with tight harmonies. It's easily in my top five albums.

4 out of 5 stars Thornhill   May 23, 2006

The title refers to a very old brand of high-end hi-fi equipment. It was known for its "smooth" sound.

That's this album, for sure, yeah. It is very, very smooth and lots of fun.

And a little retro, too. Some of it sounds a lot like late-60s rock and roll, especially the keyboards.

Very listenable - lots of fun, like all the Fruvous stuff...

3 out of 5 stars A little bit different   July 17, 2004
Katrina Hovey (NB, Canada)
I'd probably rate this CD higher if I weren't focussing mainly on the fact that it's Moxy Fruvous. This CD is very different from what most people would have come to expect from them.

This CD is much more on the side of pop music, as it is very light music, and lacks the fun light-hearted humour normally present in their other music. Instead, you get a mellow, sardonic humour that doesn't quite match up to the music.

My Favorite song on the album is Hate Letter. It begins very light-heartedly, complete with the sound of birds singing. Then goes to the words "probly won't miss you". The song is about a break up, apparently of a serious, long term relationship that somehow wasn't very significant.

That's pretty much the tone of the whole CD, with very little exception. The most up-beat song is probably Splatter Splatter, which is about the enjoyment of Slasher Movies, which it's possible they're actually mocking, but it's hard to tell.

Overall, nice and mellow, with interesting lyrics that are ironic, if not witty.

5 out of 5 stars Grows on you like a Lovely Fungus   April 8, 2004

Being a gigantic Moxy Fruvous fan myself, I was disappointingly suprised when I first heard Thornhill. I thought to myself "This isn't the Fruvous I grew to love from B and Bargainville!" Wha' Happen'?" But then, I lent this CD to my friend, about two years ago. And he has yet to return my copy. I began to miss this CD so much, that's how good it is. It simply grows on you. It shows how versatile a group Fruvous is; they don't simply tickle your funny bone, but they are poignant and harmonius. Earthquakes will be in your head all day, as will Sad Girl and Downsizing. Long story short, I had to buy a new one, and it was worth it. Better than pirating a copy. Fruvous needs money too. If you are a fan of Fruvous, of music, or of life in general, Thornhill is a must-have that will grow on you over time.

4 out of 5 stars Worth taking the time to appreciate.   July 26, 2003

I admit: the first time I listened to Thornhill, I was a bit dubious. It didn't have anything like the wacky wit or catchy melodies of previous Fruvous albums (except for "Splatter Splatter," which has both in abundance).

To my surprise, the album grew on me over time. I found myself humming "Hate Letter" while driving to work. The more I listened to the album, the more I came to appreciate it. "Sad Girl"'s lyrics nicely walk the balance between serious and sarcastic, and "Earthquakes!" has an undeniable groove. The romantic side of me likes "I Will Hold On," and "If Only You Knew," and the Fruhead in me loves the inevitable puns that appear even in Fruvous' ballads ("I'll hold your breath if that won't make you blue").

I wouldn't recommend this album to someone new to Fruvous, but fans shouldn't overlook it; there's hidden gold in here.
