One of These Days June 2, 2007 Jim (Dickinson, TX United States) I've got to write a review of this album since the reviews here don't do it justice. George Thorogood is the guy who introduced guys my age to classic blues greats like John Lee Hooker (and made us go find the originals). Anyway, this is the first Thorogood album I bought and it's great, maybe not his greatest record, but it's up there. You have instant classics that George penned like "Gear Jammer" and "I Drink Alone." George also (as usual) covers a lot of tunes by some of his favorite artists. "Crawling King Snake" is a John Lee Hooker song, "Dixie Fried" is a scorching rocker from 50s great Carl Perkins, and of course "Memphis/Marie" is a well-known Chuck Berry song. Note also a real rocker called "Go Go Go" that the record label says was also written by a guy named C. Berry. (George likes to find little-known gems of Chuck's and play the hell out of them.) I also think "Long Gone" which George also wrote, is just a fantastic little song that I find myself singing for days after listening again to this record. I bought this on vinyl when it came out in 1985. My suggestion: buy it - you'll listen to it forever.

..and I think this is his best. All the songs are solid; there's no filler/crap tunes. A little sax-heavy but as far as guitar melody and rythmn goes this cannot be beat. Production and engineering values (by Terry Manning) are first class. My fav? 'Memphis/Marie'.
George at his best April 23, 2003 Martin Lemos "Marty" (San Francisco, CA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
MAVERICK is an awesome mix of rock, blues and country are mixed into one potent drink. This album has the classic GEORGE THOROGOOD tunes: GEAR JAMMER, I DRINK ALONE, LONG GONE. Every fan of the band knows this songs, but what we also have are some lesser known tracks such as: WILLIE AND THE HAND JIVE, MAVERICK, MEMPHIS, MARIE, WOMAN WITH THE BLUES and the John Lee Hooker classic CRAWLING KING SNAKE. If you are a fan of this group, than this is a must to have in your collection. Get it while you can, this album can be really hard to find and there doesn't seem to be alot of copies floting around. You wont be disappointed, trust me
