NOT ENUFF? JUST REP ONE THIRD STONE FROM THE SUN August 28, 2006 C. Scanlon (among us humans) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
the trouble with cd's instead of vinyls on the ancient players is you cannot this cut (can we still call it a cut when it cuts no wax in the making?) at 45 RPM or even 16 RPM to hear clearly the squawking rap at the beginning which explains things in a radio call from Jimi's ship approaching Earth to Mother CEntral. But, hey, you got this cut. Lay down when the sun goes down. Turn out the lights. Put this one cut on with REP ONE set on your player. Let this cut play until the sun comes up. Get up again in a whole new different time and place. This cut is a jazz symphony, starting with a cool, clean jazzy guitar introducing the main theme after some wrangling around and a little Arabian gypsy pause, into that slow theme that continues to reappear throughout, but upon each resurrection it is no longer a clean jazzy Strat sound, but at first a regular HOT early sixties rock and roll sound, then increasingly wild and distorted fuzz boxed 1966 sound and beyond, until the space journey wiggles out on a softly throbbing whammy bar over the sound of a very late night elevated subway car. Listen to the words. Jimi invented rap along with everything else. Let him land his kinky machine. You'll never hear surf music again. This is the most constantly inventive and comprehensive piece of guitar work ever. I am certain Jimi also handled the bass (Noel wasn't worth a darn) but the drums from jazz to rock style always rumble and drop sweat on time on the dime. Just play the opne cut and thank God for it. THen after the sun arises, switch over to Are You Experienced? and arise to salute the new rising sun.
Try to imagine a version of Are You Experienced? without Purple Haze March 8, 2006 finulanu (Here, there, and everywhere) 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
Because that's exactly what the UK version of Jimi's classic debut Are You Experienced? is. That's right - no Purple Haze. Think about that for a second or two. Then keep thinking - this version does not contain other key cuts from that album such as The Wind Cries Mary or Hey Joe. That's right. Three Hendrix classics, at least on the US version, skipped. Not only that, but this disc replaces those three classics with fillers Remember and Can You See Me. However, it does get points for containing Red House, one of Hendrix's best songs. Interestingly enough, the US version doesn't. (Who's bright idea was THAT?) Unless you're a purist, skip this, skip the US version, and pick up the combo package, which gives you the original US release plus key cuts Red House, Stone Free and Highway Chile
The first capture of the master of the guitar himself March 30, 2005 S. Wilkinson (Yorkshire, England) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Are You Experienced? (1967.), Jimi Hendrix's first studio album 'Are You Experienced' is the first album capture of the legend on the guitar himself. What Jimi Hendrix achieved in the 3 or so years at the top in the world of music before his all too tragic death in 1970 is truly phenominal. No-one has ever been able to play the guitar quite like Jimi Hendrix and you see it in this album all too plainly. You could literally take away Hendrix's vocals in his songs and just listen to his playing and you would still hear the song words - the sound he produces from his guitar is like a voice speaking to you - thats how good his playing was! 'Are You Experienced' is fast approaching being 40 years old in the next couple of years and it still hasn't and will never lose its appeal. This album is listened to across generations alike and I'm sure that will be the case for years to come - this is what has made so many people over the years pick up the guitar and learn to play. Hendrix's music is so influencial. So, that's Hendrix, if you didn't probably know so already but the band he played in was the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Hendrix after not really enjoying too much success in the US in his really early years came to Britain and it was here he was discovered and really made his name. The two men who played with him in his band must not be overlooked. Mitch Mitchell was a more than capable drummer and Noel Redding, who sadly died a couple of years ago was an excellent bassist who provided the grounding for Hendrix to exert his brillaince. 'Are You Experienced' was the group's initial effort and it truly stands as one of the greatest debuts of all time as well as one of the greatest rock albums AND plenty of fans of Jimi Hendrix rate this one, along with Electric Ladyland as his best. The album contains the perfect fusion of styles. Jimi and his band give us a great dose of psychedelia in parts and then some real bluesy tunes also. Theres some good riffs in parts as well as some very catchy tunes and most of all, you hear the guitar played in a truly unique light. Two issues of this classic album are available, a US edition which has a mustard coloured background with the band pictured in a circle in the centre and a UK edition which has a dark background with Jimi pictured in the centre with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell pictured to his left and right. DO NOT WORRY if you get either one of the editions as they both contain the same 17 amazing tracks but they are just arranged in a different order. Highlights of the album??? Well maybe the whole thing is the fairest reflection! It is a real 60 minute treat. Hits 'Purple Haze' with its famous opening guitar sequence and 'Hey Joe' the slower paced, passionate rambler are both featured. 'Third Stone From the Sun' is my favourite track - this is 6 minutes of serious psychedelia, with some weird and thoughtful sections to it with another classic guitar sequence which you will have been bound to have heard before. 'Red House' will give you a taste of the blues and 'Manic Depression' has a great drum rolling style to it with some good lyrics. 'Foxey Lady' is another classic and don't forget 'Fire', for me one of the catchier tunes on the album with some more killer guitar work. 'Highway Chile' is brilliant, the guitar playing literally screams and leaps out at you when you hear it. 'Wind Cries Mary' calls the album home further with its amazing atmospheric style - the best lyrics on the album are in this one, for me anyway - this track has been covered by many artists over the years. Hendrix made the guitar great and this album is a prime example. The Experience were a great trio of musicians overall and you see this clearly with this debut effort. This is personally one of my favourite albums in my collection and in my opinion should never be overlooked - it is way, way too good to be missed out on.
This Is The Copy To Own April 8, 2004 Mad Dog (TimbuckThree, Tennessee) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you've known only the US version of Are You Experienced, you really need to pick this baby up. The British LP on Track Records was released before the US version on Reprise. The British LP did not contain the popular songs released as singles (Hey Joe, Purple Haze, The Wind Cries Mary) but did have tunes that were not found on the US version (Red House, Can You See Me, Remember). These differences in song listing affect the feel of the album in a big way. The Brisish version has a more rural feel, more of a blues and R&B thing. This version of Red House was not available in the US until the release of Blues in '94 and that's a pity. This was the original and it's truly outstanding in so many ways. To begin with, it's a blues guitar tour de force, all wrapped up in a 3-plus minute package. Take it to the bank. But it's the attitude that really sets it off and it's pure Jimi in every way. Very tongue in cheek, but built on a foundation of blues as real as Son House's sweat, Robert Johnson's tortured soul and Muddy Waters' grit. I've never been all that crazy of the studio version of Can You See Me. It can't touch the live version on Jimi at Monterey, but still, it's a great song that, along with Stone Free and 51st Anniversary, make clear that Jimi was not ready to settle down into a comfy love nest. The other track on the Brit LP not on the US is Remember. I like this tune and it's mid 60s R&B groove. It helps to complete the distinctive feel of the British version. In some ways, I think of the US version as being a more realized concept album. It sounds more modern and cohesive - and far more psychedelic. But there's something very special about this version and it's not to be missed. Take note that this particular copy also has all of the single tracks and their B-sides, so it's got all of the stuff on both LPs and more, but the playing order of the Track original is what starts the proceedings off. See my review of the US version for more fleshing out of these points.
Mr. Jimi, ' Are You Experienced?' March 20, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased one of these 'actually' "EC" release CDs. I expected the original LP picture sleeve Artwork as the original Germany Polydor GmbH vinyl, with all pictured, '(and very collectable) Polydor stickers, again, as shown. You won't be getting the pictured original LP Artwork. You will get the same 17 U.S. tracks, same order of play, I'd suggest Purchase the U.S. version of this CD. It's just another compilation of our U.S. Army, (101st Airborne), Jimi Hendrix FANTASTIC guitar stylings. This disc has a great number of Mr. Jimi's HIT titles I'd suggest, buy one, or try to grab the original vinyl with all the 'now' collectable factory stickers, just watch the ...price tag plus you may need to purchase from the U.K., where the LP was originally released on Polydor. You may even decide to be a bit British and order from amazon.co.uk. This is a Jimi Hendrix MCA authorized release, it's GREAT, grab one up!
