Good mix, decent production quality overall December 11, 2005 stage rat (indiana riviera) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I spent close to an hour listening to samples from the many cajun and zydeco cds on offer. I chose this for the good blend of the two, but also because the sound quality is good. As the other reviewer mentioned, the sound quality isn't the best, but it's quite good--especially when compared to that on other cds, such as the cajun selections on the Best of Louisiana Cajun Classics: Cajun/Zydeco. I think a lot of compilation creators must be after a quick dollar, because they seem to just grab awful-sounding recordings, sometimes from well-known bands (did they find a demo tape?) The product they sell is often so disappointing that they alienate the potential new audience who has bought the compilation cd in order to explore the genre. In my online listening I found that Cajun Music: the Essential Collection, had the best-sounding cajun recordings I've heard. They've been digitally remastered. But because I wanted both cajun and zydeco, I passed on it for the time being and happily went with the above selection.
I dream this album November 13, 2002 Leah Mays-Krebs (Fort Collins, Colorado USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I swiped this album from my college radio station years ago and I've absolutely worn it out. It is a great sampler since it has songs of both the upbeat and the tragic variety. Makes great road trip music. My faves are "Marie" and "Bonsoir, Moreau." The latter is so deeply imbedded in my memory that I have actually dreamed about it! Most of these songs are a little rough around the edges, though - - it isn't an album for those that like a clean studio recording or "candy-coated" Cajun.
