| Editorial Reviews:
Album Description Here is, bar none, the most all-inclusive anthology ever assembled to honor the greatest singer ever considered to be a "Rock and Roll artist." But Roy Kelton Orbison was so much more: behind his ever-present sunglasses and beneath his shock of raven-black hair, clad in black, he was rock's Mystery Man, the possessor of the most glorious voice ever to soar on such signature songs as "Only The Lonely," "In Dreams," "Running Scared," "Crying" and "Oh, Pretty Woman," to cite a mere handful of his Top Ten hits. As Orbison's widow, Barbara, who is also this collection's Executive Producer, points out in her loving annotation contained in this four-CD package: "For the first time, you will have a chance to hear Roy's first recording to the last time he ever sang--Dec. 4, 1988, in Akron, Ohio. Roy recorded for several different labels [including 15 covered in this 107-song collection] and toured the world many, many times--we have numerous unreleased masters [specifically, 12 in this package] and live performances included in this box set to make it truly special."
Album Description US only 4 CD set. The Soul of Rock 'n' Roll is the first of its kind box set to completely survey the career of Roy Orbison. From his very first band the Teen Kings through the legendary Sun Sessions to the massive Monument hits, his tenure at MGM and his amazing Virgin albums - with many rare and previous unreleased tracks woven inbetween. Sony BMG. 2008.

Great compilation of a great musician and his career January 6, 2009 T. J. Sampson (Minneapolis, MN) This is a wonderful addition to the music library of anyone who appreciates the career of Roy Orbison.
Greatest R.O. Product January 5, 2009 touchdownbears91979 This new Orbison box set contains 4 cds of greatness. It is considered by many to be one of the greatest Roy Orbison products ever. Even Rolling Stone gave it a 5 star review. It pours greatness from the moment you open up the package..... Personally, I am very glad that some of those 1950s recordings were made available to the public. The previously unreleased material (mainly from disc 1) is so great. The song "Tutti Frutti" has to be one of my new all-time favorite songs. Roy Orbison's voice is gold, and accompanied by some of the greatest musicians and songwriters, Orbison's voice sounds reaches a new level of greatness.
Greatest Singer in the World December 22, 2008 BSUBroncoTC This box set features the greatest singer in the world singing his greatest songs. I am very impressed with how this set was put together. The vocals are amazing, and every time I listen to a track I never heard before, I am in awe. There are so many songs, so many I haven't ever heard. I am very glad I made this purchase.
Great Purchase December 22, 2008 Josh I am not usually the guy that buys box sets because they all seem to be "Greatest Hit" compilations, and if I like an artist enough, I already own all of their CD's and I have the option of making my own greatest hit CD. But when it came to this box set, it includes much, much more than simply "Greatest Hits". There are some rare songs on here that I did not have on other disks. I enjoyed the fact that it wasn't just the CD's that you received in this package, but I also got a fairly large and informative book about Roy, I was informed of a stamp petition for him, and there were also come drawings of Roy's. Overall, it was a nice package that I found to be well worth the money for the item(s).
Precious and Priceless! Thank You Barbara Orbison! December 20, 2008 HUGO (HOUSTON, TEXAS United States) For the better part of the past two decades since his untimely and premature passing, Barbara Orbison has consistently produced remarkably outstanding, high quality remastered and impressively packaged reissues of her beloved late husband's monumental musical legacy, the incredibly gifted, influential vocalist, ROY ORBISON. Roy is deeply missed by his legions of fans the world over and unexpectedly left our world in December 1988 during the steadily rising, full steam ahead, skyrocketing comeback and what eventually became a massively celebrated, critically acclaimed, Grammy adorned astronomical return to the top of international radio playlists and best selling recording charts. Orbison has remained there ever since. It's a joyful celebration that his family experienced the phenomenal and enduring resurgence Roy's career had attained during the remainder of the 80's decade, and has retained and maintained to enduring consistency of popularity with the public through high profile releases of his musical legacy in the ensuing 20 years. Mrs. Orbison is determined to keep ROY ORBISON's memory alive and in the public conscious through his music for all the generations of fans who are easily won over snd swept away into his delightful musical world once they happen to hear one of his vocal gems. Roy Orbison, with his gorgeous multi-octave vocal abilities, is a music fan's ultimate dream, fulfilling expectations through exceptional songwriting gifts and [musician's] superb instrumental playing skills. Mr. Orbison played a mean guitar in his time, but it's all about his VOICE! Hearing and experiencing that glorious Orbison vocal style, you just gotta have your own Roy Orbison Cds - and Mrs. Orbison delivers exceptional remastered recordings from the vaults, sparing no details on the upgrading production with this latest set! THE SOUL OF ROCK AND ROLL[2008] four disc Orbison Box Set is a vast improvement over Sony's sloppy, unfocused 1988 four disc set that seemed to be rush released to capitalize on his sudden rise and return to the summit of popularity. THE SOUL OF ROCK AND ROLL features a career defining, impressively generous 107 tracks, REMASTERED to perfection, from Mr. Orbison's illustrious 33 year musical career, which spanned fom 1955 through 1988. Included on this set are 12 previously unreleased rare Orbison gems in both studio, and thankfully, very few "live" concert takes. Though every recording here is of priceless and exceptional value, among the greatest additions are the enduring glimpses of Roy's masterful vocal qualities through the inclusions of "In Dreams" - "Crying" - "It's Over" & "Oh Pretty Woman" in their initial 1960's hit versions, plus the latter day 1980's rerecorded "hit" [again] versions which fully demonstrate how Orbison's abilities and interpretive skills, with material identified only with him, simply became more splendidly enriching in tone and flawless expertise over the passing of time. Of special note is "Pretty Woman", in its rocking, punch packing original chart topping 1964 version[disc three], revisited in a 1985 update which finds our hero vocally soaring to the stratosphere once again, then reprising it in an equally outstanding over 6 minute "live" version from "A Black % White Night", both on disc four. Roy's "Pretty Woman" never fails to lose its allure, no matter how he executes and delivers the song! Amazing to hear and notice Roy's voice never lost its impact, nor resonating epic proportions as he aged - his voice got richer and richer, effortlessly hitting the highest of the high notes, as his career moved forward. Disc One exclusively features his early beginnings, 1950's era, with a small sampling of his Wink Westerners[1955] and Teen Kings[1956-57]group 45's, a smattering of Doo-Wop styled outings, then segues right into his solo career, with a generous sampling of tracks from Roy's Sun Records tenure in the late 50's. Also featured here are nine or ten precious demos, including his original "Claudette". OOBY DOOBY & ROCKHOUSE are included. Disc Two, beginning in 1960, finds Roy evolving, discovering and settling into his impeccable vocal style, while hitting his commercial stride all over the radio and charts, reaching newfound heights of popularity the world over. Trail blazing hit record after hit record, disc two includes his chart sweeping 45's from 1960-64 at Monument Records. Every hit single, plus some key album tracks & 'covers', all here in their original versions, plus, the highly coveted, rare "Evergreen" track[originally only on his first 1960's Greatest Hits Lp] taking its place among the popular tunes. Roy's "hit record" Monument era years overlaps on to disc three; also includes many of his MGM Records era singles & tracks, as well as highlights from his latter Elektra Records period, rounding out the remainder of the 1970's with his Elvis Presley tribute, "Hey Hound Dog Man". Disc Four features Roy's 1980's era efforts of his slow train, building to a steamrolling, thunderous stride and glorious return to the summit of the music business, including all his latter era hits and key tracks from "Mystery Girl", "Traveling Wilburys", and his posthumously released albums. The final disc displays the enriching, encompassing, previously unfathomed levels Roy's music had evolved to and leaves one wondering what might have transpired if Orbison had lived to mine the rich, fertile musical ground he'd been sowing all along. Roy Orbison is a rare artist's artist - universally aclaimed and highly revered by both his peers and fans across the generations and time. You've never heard Roy's impeccable vocals as crystal clear, crisp, finely defined and pristine as on this entire set - add to all that the perfect note for note instrumentation and orchestral strings that backed him on so many of his records and you get the ultimate Orbison music experience and package. Each of the four discs features a delightful overview of recordings Roy's musical explorations and each decade from the mid 1950's through Roy's return to esteemed popularity in the late 80's and beyond. THANK YOU again BARBARA! Previously, I bought and have sincerely enjoyed the three early 1960's era landmark Roy Orbison Monument Records albums, ROY ORBISON SINGS LONELY AND BLUE"[1960],"CRYING"[1962] & "IN DREAMS"[1963], which Mrs. Orbison had painstakingly restored/remastered to the most minute details and reissued in August 2006 with an impressively generous 16 tracks per disc, including bonus tracks, which for the most part feature Roy's essential hit 45's from the era. [I was a mere toddler when these albums were first unleashed on the public, so I discovered ROY at a much latter time in my life, as a teen, and am happy and grateful I did, because his music has enriched my life.] Those three long out-of-print Orbison Lps are "must haves" and essential to a music fans' music library, a collector's dream to own and a joy to listen to Roy's originals alongside his endearing versions of a few other hits songs of the day - seek them out here at Amazon.com while they remain in print and available, as they are a great companion to THE SOUL OF ROCK AND ROLL Box Set. Hard to believe it's been 20 years since ROY ORBISON departed our world, but thanks to Barbara Orbison, our beloved ROY will never leave us and his hits will keep on coming for decades into the future!
