Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
By now, some of you may have heard rumour of an album called "Momofuku" and wonder what this record is...

Well, the real version is pressed on two pieces of black plastic with a whole in the middle. You may prefer other, more portable, less scratchable, editions that will soon become available for your convenience but this is how it sounds the best: with a needle in a groove, the way the Supreme Being intended it to be...

The absence of much advance notice or information might seem a little strange and perverse but the record was made so quickly that I didn't even tell myself about it for a couple weeks.

So, what can I tell you about "Momofuku"?

Well, obviously the title is a tribute to Momofuku Ando, the inventor of the Cup Noodle. Like so many things in this world of wonders, all we had to do to make this record was add water.

Now, I understand that there is also a fancy eatery in New York City that has made the same connection with Ando-San. So, just in case anybody is inclined to mistake our record for something edible, we've added a disclaimer to the record jacket. I like saying, "record jacket" again.

For those who like to know these things, we recorded exclusively to tape, completing and mixing each song before moving on to the next. The entire record took a week to record and mix.

The music has been pressed on four sides of vinyl for volume and clarity although the album was originally sequenced with six tracks a-side.

Every record has its own method. This was the one for these songs.

3 out of 5 stars I Love Elvis But...   September 22, 2008

...I found this to be rather a boring album, as though he phoned it in. Or, as the title suggests, he simply added water to his noodles. Before you dismiss this review, let me state that I am a HUGE Elvis Costello fan and have been, all through his ups and downs. I even enjoyed "Goodbye Cruel World". And I appreciated, if I didn't really care for, "The Juliet Letters" (which, I know, isn't purely a Costello album). But I expect more from Costello. As far as these songs go, they are rather disposable.

3 out of 5 stars An ok album but not a classic Elvis Costello   September 15, 2008
W. Dietrich (Las Vegas)
I read other reviews and have to question all the 5 star ratings. A rating system is to give comparison between albums. If everyone rates MOMOFUKU a 5 star they are essentially saying this album is a classic and as good as it gets. This is where I disagree I felt this album was so-so with a couple of great songs mixed in with a few not so good. I see reviews that compare the album to Blood and Choclate which deserves a 5 star rating, MOMOFUKU is no Blood and Choclate. This is a good album and true fans will enjoy it but to say that it is a throw back to classic Elvis is not accurate. It is unlikely EC will ever make another album that compares to his earlier stuff, he is growing as an artist and deserves to try different avenues.

5 out of 5 stars How does he do it?   September 12, 2008
Daniel Dravot (Right here, USA, Planet: Earth!)
I don't know how it's happening, but this album gets better every week. This is good music.

always a treat when elvis gets the rock quartet thing going again...not the best...and i miss the attractions (bruce thomas) but it's better than 90% of the rock music out there.

5 out of 5 stars Costello scores again!   July 11, 2008

Back in the day, as a young DJ we received Costello's first album at the radio station. All the other jocks laughed at his Buddy Hollyish look.
I thought he looked cool and all the tunes on that, what I think was his first release, were great.
Then this past year I saw him live with Dylan. Just Elvis and his guitar and frankly I thought he was a lot more entertaining than Bob.
I bought his latest and was knock out by the diversity he shows on this record. "American Gangster Time" with its hint of organ in the background is a killer. The other tunes on this release are just as good especially the eclectic "Harry Worth".
This is Costello's best in a long time. I think I'll listen to it again, and again and again...
