Album Description Import pressing of the Smooth Pop/Jazz duo's 2008 album. Swing Out Sister rose to fame along with Sade, Carmel, Matt Bianco and other likeminded Jazz-influenced acts. Although their commercial peak came early in their career, they've continued to release albums that exude all the charm of their hits yet are filled with more maturity and emotional depth. Beautiful Mess is another step forward for the band. 12 tracks including the single 'Secret Love' and the two bonus tracks that appeared on the Japanese version, Butterfly (Little Wizard Mix) and Something Every Day (Little Wizard Mix.) Avex.

THEY ARE BACK TRUE TO FORM !! August 17, 2008 barry (Boston, MA United States) I have loved Swing Out Sister since their first single BREAKOUT. Wow, was that really 21 years ago? They have always provided us with quality music. Some sets have been better than others but usually they strike a true home run. I was slightly disappointed with WHERE OUR LOVE GROWS, their last release but BEAUTIFUL MESS is an amazing and important addition to their vast catalogue. I have read that when an artist is around for a decade they are considered a true success. SOS has been around 2 decades plus. Often with lengthy careers such as this releases become formulaic and the artist will rest on their laurels. Not Swing Out Sister. For me this cd begins a whole new reinvention and is as creative and unique as their very best work. As someone else said if you love SOS this cd is a must have but if you are new to them this is the place to start. The set is amazingly imaginative yet cohesive and is true inventive jazz. Corinne Drewery, whose vocals only improve with age, caresses each note as she emotionally tells each tale with each song. There is no filler here. Sometimes SOS uses too may instrumental pieces but here they do not. Standouts are SOMETHING EVERY DAY, I'D BE HAPPY, SECRET LOVE and BEAUTIFUL MESS. This cd is a true gift from Swing Out Sister to all their loyal fans. Obviously their heart and sould was put into this excellect set. I just wish their popularity had not dwindled in the US. But that seems to be the way with a lot of the best artists.
Booooooooring July 28, 2008 A. Katz (Haifa Israel) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a long-time SOS fan, I was disappointed. Except for track 9, the whole CD is just boring.
Every work of art is different, this SOS is still art at its finest July 4, 2008 T. Smith 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
It is a distinctly American quality to compare things and declare that one is better than another. It speaks to our undying desire, however misguided, to win. To that end, I find it ironic that reviewers in this space have criticized this work as inferior to other SOS editions. It would seem counterintuitive to me since I would have assumed that SOS listeners would be of a higher mind. One would never compare two different works of Picasso and say this brush stroke is better than that one. This color brighter than that. The same holds true for Beautiful Mess. I, for one, am in love with this collection. As has always been the case, SOS enters my life at just the right time and touches and changes my world in a way that few artists can do. Yes, there are fewer sweeping strings sections and it is more subdued than other offerings. But SOS are artists and as such, they paint the aural pictures that are integral to their present existence. We all grow, we all change. And so, I am again struck by the oddity that their fans won't allow them to do the same. Now to the disc. If your favorite SOS disc is The Living Return, then BM is a must for you. While TLR is my fav, I have always been disappointed with the sound quality and have secretly hoped it will be remastered some day. In contrast, BM brings the intricacies and delicious layers into full listening view with excellent quality. The melodies are as gorgeous as ever and Drewery's voice is altogether ageless, still lush, still achingly honest. To pick a favorite song in this collection would be difficult. I encourage all SOS fans to purchase BM and to listen without bias. Explore this work of art as you would any other...with an open mind.
Another Wonderful Musical Journey June 30, 2008 G. Carter (Temple Hills, maryland United States) SOS returns again with another wonderful mix of R&B, jazz, soul and brazilian that gives us 'Beautiful Mess' a nice laid back set from them, 'Time Tracks You Down' is a highlight, love the background vocals arrangements on 'Something Everyday' and 'Secret Love', the utter joy of 'I'll Be Happy','Butterfly Lullably' is a nice instrumental, two remixes called the 'Little wizard mix' on 'Butterfly' is a good mix but the 'SED' mix is not so good, SOS fans who want another musical journey should add this to there collection!
Beautiful indeed June 11, 2008 Bruno Sanchez Molina (Veracruz, Mexico) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
