Another Great One From Neil March 2, 2006 Ron (Brooklyn, NY, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Yet another wonderful album from Neil, with perfect production quality, as usual. It's remarkable how all of his albums, for the most part, sound like they were recorded yesterday. The major songs to come off of this one are September Morn, That Kind, and The Good Lord Loves You. The price is right, too. If you're a Neil fan, you've got to add this one to your collection. If you're trying to get into Neil, this would not be the one to start off with, however. I would recommend his new 12 Songs or perhaps Tennessee Moon for that purpose.
worth it for "Mama Don't Know" alone December 6, 2005 10 Dollar Dreamer (Boston) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
September Morn has many covers, but the best are the few originals."Mama Dont Know" has an intoxicating techno beat and bassline, and Neil doing his "Brother Love" preacher thing.Love the big "Heal Me,Make Me Holy" chorus.A great song. "That Kind" is also a great song-a very pretty old-hollywood tale.Kind of like a low key "Candle in the Wind". the jazzy remake of "I'm A Believer" is well, interesting. the only covers I like are "The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Anymore"(amazing how melancholy and big-sounding Neil turned this little oldie) and "The Good Lord Loves You" (a strong cry for tolerance and peace instead of war). September Morn is uneven though-why cover "Dancing in the Street" in 1979?Just sounds lightweight and weak.I always skip the title cut.And the "Stagger Lee" cover is a weak way to end this album.
Very Uneven and boring April 21, 2004 Michael J. Holland (Novi, MI United States) 5 out of 13 found this review helpful
Starting with September Morn, all of ND's CDs have been very uneven and this is one of his worst. This has a few songs that are listenable and the majority is so BORING!!!! I wish they would put out Greatest Hits Vol. 3 with all of his great songs since September Morn that aren't on Vol. 2 including That Kind, The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore, On The Way To The Sky, Right By You, The Drifter, First You Have to Say You Love Me, Front Page Story, Heartlight, In Ensanada, Turn Around, You Make It Feel Like Christmas, Sleep With Me Tonight, The Man You Need, Story of My Life, It Should Have Been Me, (I'll See You On The Radio) Laura, Me Beside You, Best Years of Our Lives, This Time, If I Couldn't See You Again, If There Were No Dreams, Don't Turn Around, Hooked On The Memory of You and a couple from Tennesse Moon and Three Chord Opera. Now that would be an AWESOME CD and you wouldn't have to waste your hard-earned money on awful CDs like this with only a couple good songs!!!!
I like it! January 25, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Sounds like I'm in the minority but I have the tape and love it enough to buy the CD as well!
