5 out of 5 stars I'm Glad To Have This Album!   June 11, 2008
B. J O'Connor (Holmdel,NJ USA)
Released in late-1977,"I'm Glad You're Here With Me Tonight" finds the Brooklyn-born singer/songwriter offing a little something for everyone:Uptempo power pop like "Let The Little Boy Sing" and "Let Me Take You In My Arms";lush easy-listening ballads like the title track,"Once In A While" and "As If";respectable covers of classic Brian Wilson("God Only Knows") and Joni Mitchell("Free Man In Paris") plus the disco-ish Top 20 hit "Desiree'",a sweeping neo-rock epic "Lament In D Minor/Dance Of The Sabres" and the torch song "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" which the following year became a blockbuster #1 smash duet with Barbra Streisand (thus became the title of his following album).Essential for any Neil Diamond fan,and at a dirt cheap price too!

4 out of 5 stars I loved it BUT   May 4, 2008
Davis H. (Michigan)
The songs were very enjoyable, Deserai, I'm Glad Your Hear With Me Tonight." This was a time when Diamond could make anything sound good. He was a major hit maker back then.

Still, it was the start of a long slide towards barry Manilowish pop that did not end until the 1996 "Tennessee Moon."

4 out of 5 stars His passion comes through   October 29, 2005
J. Carroll (Island Heights,NJ)
This is probably one of the more divisive of Diamond's albums. Fans of his earlier works feel it is over produced and schmaltzy, others believe things are only enhanced by the use of sophisticated orchestrations; after listening once again, I find myself in the latter camp. While on songs like "Once in a While" the background is too busy, filled with soaring strings "tinkling" synths; the next song "Let the Little Boy Sing" shows how well this style can work elevating a fairly slight piece into one of sheer joy. Opening and closing with compositions by Brian Wilson and Joni Mitchell, Diamond does a great job in making "God Only Knows" and "A Free Man in Paris" his own (both worth the price of admission) and his own compositions work well between these wonderful "bookends." I can appreciate the point of those critical of this work, but his voice convinces me, there's just as much passion here and he's not buried in the sound. It just supports him in an occasionally over lush cocoon, but still has the emotion needed to make the album work.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best and best produced   October 16, 2005
Darren S. Wools (minneapolis)
here I think there is a perfect balance between production and musicianship. The cover of god only knows is incredible and so is "as if". Neil Diamond is in a category of his own. Sabre Dance is a good song which combines classical and modern acoustic sounds and is very intense. I think this was the first album that vince charles played on. The other thing I like about neil diamond in the 70s is that the drum acoustics are among the best. There is a constant balance of sound. Throughout the 60s and 70s many bands had horrible production (especially elton john and the eagles)in the drum department. If you listen to Neil through the 70s and 80s the production is among the best in the industry. This album is ahead of its time musically.

4 out of 5 stars An underrated album   July 16, 2004
W. Pender (Cathedral City, CA United States)
This is actually one of Diamond's best albums, though terribly underrated. Two of my favorite songs are on this album and on no other; "Glad You're Here with Me Tonight" and "Once In A While" are among his finest works. The only reason I didn't give it '5' is because the volume level is low for a CD recording.
