A complete album for fans of his work on "Shortbus"April 22, 2008 D. Alexander(Long Beach, CA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I discovered Scott Matthew on the soundtrack to John Cameron Mitchell's movie, "Shortbus." He performs his songs in the movie. His voice is often compared to David Bowie. On his MySpace page, he describes his genre as anti-folk.
The songs are carefully crafted, with poetic, bittersweet lyrics and spare accoustic instrumentation using guitar and piano, but also including banjo, ukelele, and French horn on some tracks.
Tracks:
1. Amputee 2. Abandoned 3. Prescription 4. Ballad Dear 5. Little Bird 6. Laziest Lie 7. Upside down 8. Habit 9. In the End 10. Surgery 11. Market me to Children
The same versions of "Upside Down," Little Bird," and "In the End" were on the "Shortbus" soundtrack, but the version of "Surgery" is an accoustic version which is less poppy. The sound samples available for the soundtrack are a good representation of the flavor and tone of the album.
The new songs on the album are equally good, no need to worry that all his best work was culled for "Shortbus." Many of the new songs can be heard on either his MySpace page or his website. Some of his performances have been videotaped and posted on YouTube.
Sadly, although he lives in Brooklyn, he signed with a German record company and is currently touring Europe. A domestic distributor would be nice for all his American fans. Import prices are a bit dear with the current dollar. Maybe he can send a box to Amazon to stock for him.
