Amy Winehouse scored a UK hit with 2003's Frank, but her follow-up is another story. Released in 2007, Back to Black blew up worldwide. So, the bouffant belter took her soulful show on the road. It turned out to be a short trip; after only a few dates, she canceled her North American tour due to "severe exhaustion." Fortunately, I Told You I Was Trouble captures the petite powerhouse before personal problems sidelined her for the rest of the year. Recorded live at London's Shepherd's Bush, Winehouse and nine-piece ensemble, including two smooth-moving back-up singers, blast through 13 originals and four covers, including the Zutons' "Valerie" and the Specials' "Hey Little Rich Girl." Vivacious voice aside, Winehouse looks uncomfortable at times, alternately awkward and endearing. Yes, she drinks, but insecurity appears to be as much to blame as (possible) inebriation, though she does loosen up after awhile. And there's some good stuff here, especially the Ronettes-inspired "Back to Black" and "Rehab." As her albums attest, Winehouse is one of the decade's most electrifying artists, but the stage may not be the best showcase for her abilities--not yet, at any rate. While I Told You I Was Trouble isn't the triumph it could've been, it isn't a train wreck either. The informative 50-minute documentary features interviews with Winehouse, her proud papa, and the A&R representative who signed her to Island Records. One of the lady's more interesting revelations: "The more insecure I get, the bigger my hair has to be." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars She's good!   December 14, 2008
William Heyman (Sierra Nevada)
I'm seventy years old, and been to a few jazz concerts. Met Duke Ellington, never saw Billie Holiday, but have the recordings, and Amy Winehouse is as good, maybe better, since she writes most of what she sings, and most of it is jazz, but don't tell the young folks. Vocalization good, timing good, phrasing good, some slurs, which may be good or bad depending upon what caused them. Hopefully not what brought Billie down. Get her act while you can.

4 out of 5 stars I just wish I understood what she was singing...   November 27, 2008

There is no doubt about her quality as a singer but live...it is quite difficult to understand anything that she says...It is a beautiful tribute to jazz and I can't stop seeing it.

Her reputation got my attention before I even knew of her music. One day I just got tired of hearing what a "bad" "girl" she was and set out to find out did she have talent to go with the bad rep.

I was impressed. I love her style. She reminds me of a cross between Macy Gray, and Sade. She has that different vocal style like Macy's, and her onstage performance reminds me of Sade, though she has a while to go before I would consider her to be "up there" with Sade.

And I must say, I've never seen a performer wet their throat as often as she did in this performance, but even so, I loved this concert and her version of "Love is Loosing Game" is the best that I've heard on her other recordings. I bought the single with the different versions of that particular song, but the one from this concert was not on it and I was disappointed. I really enjoyed the entire performance and I've watched and listened to it many times.

I loved her band. Each musician is highly talented. Watching each of them was as pleasurable as watching Amy Winehouse.

If she can manage not to be derailed by alcohol and drugs, I look forward to hearing more from her.

We had originally taped a performance Amy did on MTVHD, which was part of what this DVD was in total. She was fabulous and we certainly enjoyed it.
